Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers allowed three first period goals and would lose to South Carolina by a score of 4-1.
In the first period, the Checkers fell behind early and often. First it was Stingrays forward, Cail McLean who was the recipient of a great pass from Matt Reid on a two-on-one break. McLean buried the shot on Checkers netminder, Curtis Darling at 2:03. Later, it was Steve Pinizzotto at 9:41 on the power play who fired a shot through traffic and behind Darling putting the game 2-0 in favor of South Carolina. The last goal of the period came after Travis Morin got a nice cross crease pass from Pinizzotto and flipped a shot into a gaping net at 18:57 while South Carolina was on a four-on-three man advantage.
The only goal of the second period came off a short-handed breakaway from Reid at 5:23 lifting the game to 4-0 in favor of South Carolina.
The Checkers would get on the board after Blake Bellefeulle wristed a shot behind goaltender Davis Parley at 3:43 but it wouldn't be enough to bridge the gap and the Checkers would fall by a score of 4-1.
Notes: Darling made 24 saves on 28 shots including a penalty shot...Parley stopped 25 of 26 shots...Sting Rays scored three power play goals on eight tries and the Checkers scored once on 10 chances.
The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on Nov. 27 against the Augusta Lynx. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399. The Checkers are accepting deposits on all ticket packages. For season ticket information, please call 704-342-4-ICE or visit www.gocheckers.com.
