
Wranglers Streak Ends, Steelheads Win 2-0

Boise, ID - The Las Vegas Wranglers (20-3-4, 44 points) were defeated by the Idaho Steelheads (12-9-7, 31 points) 2-0 at the Qwest Arena on Saturday night. Idaho goalie Steve Silverthorn picked up the win, stopping all 31 Las Vegas shots for his first shutout of the season. Steelheads forwards Marty Flichel and Taggert Desmet each scored in the Idaho victory. The Wranglers lost for the first time in regulation since falling 8-5 at home on November 2nd. The loss marked the first time this season that the Wranglers have been shutout. Las Vegas will play Idaho again next Thursday at the Orleans Arena at 7:05 pm.
In the first period, both team traded blows with three fights in the first nine minutes of play. Wranglers' defenseman Tyson Strachan and forward Kelly Czuy were both thrown out of the game for their infractions. The Steelheads scored the only goal of the period with Taggert Desmet scoring his tenth goal of the season at 15:48, for the 1-0 Idaho lead after one period of play. Las Vegas and Idaho combined for 74 penalty minutes in the opening period.
In the second period, Idaho doubled the lead to 2-0 when center Marty Flichel fired a slapshot from the point for his sixth goal of the season at 5:08. The power-play tally was assisted by Mark Bomersback and Darrell Hay.
Las Vegas will return home on Thursday, December 27th at 7:05 pm to host the Steelheads. The same two teams will also play at the Orleans Arena on Friday, December 28th at 7:05 pm. The Wranglers will then travel to Bakersfield for a game with the Condors at 6:00 pm on Sunday, December 30th, before returning to host Stockton at 5:05 pm on New Year's Day.
