Salmon Kings' All Stars Lead Way To Victory
December 22, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
It was a battle of the two top teams in the West Division tonight as the Victoria Salmon Kings hosted the Alaska Aces for game two of a three game set between the teams. The Kings were looking to rebound after suffering just their second home loss of the season in a shootout to the Aces on Wednesday night.
The Kings would strike first notching a power play goal midway through the opening frame. Ash Goldie was left all alone in front and made no mistake putting his league leading 10th power play goal behind Derek Gustafson. Ash wasn't done there as the All-Star scored his 17th goal of the season just two minutes later giving the Kings a two goal lead.
The Aces would cut the deficit to one at the 15:07 minute mark of the first period as Olivier Filion blasted his seventh goal of the season behind Julien Ellis. Lee Green and Tim Spencer drew the assists. Despite a flurry of activity near Victoria's net late in the period the Kings were able to take their one goal lead into the intermission.
The second period started out with the Kings killing off two penalties, one a double minor. The Kings got life from a strong penalty kill and at the12:24 mark Ash Goldie sent the Victoria crowd of 5,264 into deafening cheers as he completed the hat trick ripping a shot high over the shoulder of Gustafson. Assisting on the play was Dylan Yeo and Kevin Estrada.
The Kings continued their onslaught of goals with the fourth of the night coming at the 14:54 mark of the frame off the stick of captain Kiel McLeod. Only 17 seconds later, veteran Ryan Wade scored his 50th goal as a Salmon King and as a professional, giving the Kings a 5-1 lead after two periods of play.
The third period started the same way the second ended for the Salmon Kings, as Darryl Lloyd put two more goals behind Gustafson good for his second and third of the season. Wes Goldie would cap the night off with a power play marker giving the Salmon Kings the 8-1 victory.
The Kings finished the night with 40 shots on net and went 2-5 (40%) with the man advantage while the Aces fired 27 shots on Ellis and went 0-6 on the power play. The Kings now sit 5 points ahead of the Aces in the National Conference. Game three goes Saturday night in Victoria at 7:05pm. Call 220-7889 for tickets.
