December 22, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID - Goaltender Steve Silverthorn stopped all 31 shots he faced, including 16 in the third period, as the Steelheads topped the Wranglers 2-0 in front of 4,854 fans at Qwest Arena on Saturday night.
With the win, the Steelheads (12-9-7) took the three-game series from the National Conference leading Wranglers (20-3-4), earning four out of a possible six points and ending the Wranglers 20-game unbeaten streak. The victory is the 11th for the Steelheads at home, while it's also their second shutout decision of the campaign and their fifth win in their last seven games.
The Steelheads tallied the only goal in a penalty-filled opening period. At 15:48, Taggart Desmet collected his own rebound and poked the puck past Daniel Manzato (21 saves) for his 10th of the season and second in as many nights. Jeremy Scherlinck, who started the play with a shot from the high slot, and Colin Sinclair grabbed the assists on what proved to be the eventual game-winner.
Through one period the Steelheads led in shots 13-8 with the two teams combining for 74 penalty minutes and three fights.
Marty Flichel put the Steelheads in front 2-0 with a power play goal 5:08 into the second period, his sixth marker of the season. Darrell Hay registered his third helper of the series on the goal, while Mark Bomersback picked up the second assist, as Flichel's one-timer from the left wing side found its way through traffic and past a stunned Manzato.
After 40 minutes of play the Steelheads held a 2-0 advantage.
There was no scoring in the third period, and the final shots favored the Wranglers 31-23. Both clubs had five power play opportunities, with the Steelheads converting once. Silverthorn, who pitched five shutouts last season, is now 5-5-4 on the year, while Manzato falls to 11-1-1.
The Steelheads now head to the road for a seven-game, 12-day road trip beginning on Thursday, December 27. The puck drops at 8:10 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on 1350 AM, KTIK "The Ticket" or via the B2 Networks. Don't forget, Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
