Augusta Lynx News Release

It took nine shooters, but the Augusta Lynx finally scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 shootout win on Friday over the Charlotte Checkers. In the shootout, the Lynx were down to their final shooters not once, but twice. However, clutch shootout goals from #18 Igor Pohanka and #25 Adrian Veideman kept the Lynx alive long enough for #21 Bobby Bolt to net the game-winner through the legs of Matt Zaba. The game started with the Lynx on the attack. However, it was the Lynx penalty kill that gave them the apparent lead. #19 Aaron Slattengren stole the puck at the blueline as the Lynx were trying to kill off a 5 on 3 and raced in alone on Zaba. Zaba stopped Slattengren's shot, but was run into by his own defenseman who's momentum carried the puck over the goal line. Much to the dislike of the crowd and the Lynx bench the shorthanded goal was disallowed and the game remained scoreless. Minutes later Slattengren got his redemption as he slipped home a pass from #23 John Laliberte and #9 Louis Goulet to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead. The Lynx continued their pressure in the 2nd period, but Zaba held strong. One of Charlotte's eight power plays in the game netted their first goal with a shot from the point from Kenton Smith that appeared to bounce and handcuff Lynx goaltender #35 JP Levasseur to tie the game at 1-1. The 3rd period saw the Lynx get outshot by the Checkers who spent the final minutes in the penalty box thanks to two consecutive too many men on the ice penalties. However, thanks to the league's best home penalty kill and Levasseur's key stops, the game went into overtime. In the extra frame the Lynx outshot the Checkers 6-1, but could not find the net. In the shootout Laliberte scored first before needing the heroics of Pohanka, Veideman and Bolt to win and snap a two-game skid.
