'Caps Use Three Pitchers in 9-1 Loss

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps bullpen gave up seven runs in three innings for the second consecutive night in a 9-1 loss to the Kane County Cougars in front of 5,076 fans Monday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Matt Tabor, Kane County's starting pitcher and the Diamondbacks' #13 prospect, pitched a gem allowing only one run through six innings of work with five strikeouts while Whitecaps relievers surrendered seven runs in the loss.

The Cougars plated two runs in the top of the first highlighted by a Joey Rose RBI-single to take an early 2-0 lead. Kane County threatened to add more in the top of the fifth as three-straight base hits loaded the bases before Rose grounded into a force out followed by back-to-back strikeouts by Brad Bass to escape the inning. In the bottom half, the "Caps tallied their lone run on the night as Chris Proctor lined a base hit into left field scoring Jack Kenley and cutting the lead to 2-1. The Dragons responded by tallying five in the seventh inning and two in the eighth inning highlighted by a Dominic Fletcher two-run home run to put the finishing touches on a 9-1 Cougars victory.

Brad Bass (1-2) pitched 5.2 innings allowing two runs on eight hits in taking his second loss. Tabor (4-2) tossed six frames of one-run baseball with five strikeouts in his fourth win of 2019. Relievers Drew Crosby and Angel Reyes combined for three innings of seven-run baseball. Chester Pimentel came on in relief for the Cougars dealing three shutout innings with eight strikeouts in his sixth save on the campaign. The West Michigan Whitecaps fall to (30-63) on the year while the Kane County Cougars improve to (51-42). The Whitecaps bullpen gave up a combined 16 runs in the final two games of the homestand. The Whitecaps fall to 30-63 and 9-15 in the second half standings while Kane County improves to 51-42 and 16-8.
