Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Atley Calvert played the role of hometown hero for the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday night.

Calvert scored a natural hat trick to lead the Warriors to a 4-1 win over the rival Regina Pats at Mosaic Place on Hockey Day in Canada.

The win extends the Warriors' winning streak to six games.

"It's a lot of fun to come to the rink right now, we're really clicking as a team and we're bonding, so it's a lot of fun and we're hoping to keep it going," Calvert said after the win.

It was Calvert's first hat trick in the Western Hockey League. He said he hasn't had one since his bantam days in Moose Jaw minor hockey.

"I haven't really got anything since, so it was a special game," he said.

Carl Tetachuk backstopped the Warriors to the win, making 33 saves, including 15 in the third period to earn his 19th win of the season.

Warriors assistant coach Gord Burnett said the 20-year-old netminder is the calming influence for the team.

"He's just been incredible," Burnett said. "He's really good for our young players, he's good for scenarios when we get running around in our d-zone, he has awareness when maybe he should freeze it up."

Ryder Korczak opened the scoring for the Warriors with a power play goal, finding a rebound in front to score his 16th of the season just 6:11 into the game.

The Pats found life early in the second period when Tye Spencer banged home a rebound in front just 3:53 into the frame to tie the game.

Calvert took over after that.

The Moose Jaw product tipped in a Max Wanner point shot midway through the period to put the Warriors back in front.

Then just over three minutes later, Calvert wired a shot over Drew Sim's blocker for his ninth of the season, making it 3-1 after two.

Calvert completed the hat trick with another great shot over Sim's glove with 4:50 gone in the third period.

Moose Jaw's special teams came up big midway through the third, killing off a five-on-three power play that turned into a six-on-three when Regina pulled its goalie for an extra attacker.

"We had an idea what to expect, but when you watch any six-on-whatever advantage, it's alway about the goalie's backside, so it's really important that we manage the goalie's backside and let Teddy focus on the puck," Burnett said.

"Really happy with our penalty kill over the last couple of months here, obviously we had a tough start to the season, so really happy with that."

The Warriors finished 1-for-3 on the power play and killed off all four of the Pats' power plays.

Regina outshot Moose Jaw 34-28 overall in the game.

The Warriors now six points up on the Saskatoon Blades for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

Moose Jaw returns to the ice next weekend with two road games in Swift Current and Brandon.
