Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (28-10-2-1) scored six second-period goals on Saturday night as they abolished the Enemy Empire Swift Current Broncos (14-21-4-1) by a score of 7-0 in the Oil Kings annual Star Wars night at Rogers Place.
The Oil Kings took quick charge of the first period as they generated multiple high-danger scoring chances in the opening five minutes but were unable to solve Swift Current netminder Reid Dyck.
The Broncos were able to find their skating legs late in the first period and as both team's traded chances in the final minute of opening 20 minutes, the Broncos best opportunity to open the scoring was thwarted by a sprawling right-pad save by Sebastian Cossa and then the rebound attempt blocked by, an also sprawling, Kaiden Guhle.
The Oil Kings took full control of the game in the second period as they would outshoot the Broncos 21-1 and put a half-dozen of those 21 shots into the back of the Broncos net.
Jake Neighbours started the goal scoring onslaught just 1:46 into the middle stanza as he drilled home a one-timer from the right-wing circle off a perfect cross-ice setup from Jakub Demek, as the Oil Kings rookie import extended his league-best point streak to 18 games.
Carter Souch made it 2-0 Edmonton with his first of two in the period as at exactly the five minute mark he tipped home a back-door pass from Dylan Guenther.
Neighbours returned the favor for Demek at the 7:30 mark as the Oil Kings captain found Demek at the top of the left-circle where he would laser in a wrist shot.
Brendan Kuny made it a 4-0 advantage just over a minute later as he pinballed a puck in with a sharp angle shot from near the left-wing corner.
With just over five minutes to play in the frame, Justin Sourdif stripped a Broncos defender of the puck at the Swift Current blueline to send himself in on a two-on-nothing rush with Souch and the Panthers prospect would find Souch open for a tap-in on a cross-crease dish.
With under a minute left in the period, Cole Miller made it a six-goal advantage as he took a pass from Josh Williams in the slot and fired the puck over the right-pad of Dyck.
The Oil Kings continued to pour it on in the third period firing 14 more shots the way of Dyck but only one would get by him after Kaiden Guhle was setup perfectly on a cross-ice pass from below the goal line from Nieghbours.
Cossa registered his 20th win of the season and third shutout making 11 saves, while Dyck took the loss stopping 43 of a season-high 50 shots by the Oil Kings. The Oil Kings went zero-for-three on the power play, the Broncos were zero-for-six.
Next up, the Oil Kings continue their five-game homestand as they welcome the Lethbridge Hurricanes to town for a Family Fun Sunday tomorrow at 4:00 PM.
NOTES:
