Broncos, Pats to Renew Hostilities in First Round of 2018 WHL Playoffs
March 17, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Swift Current Broncos News Release
If Friday night was any indicator of what fans are in for, a first-round date between the Swift Current Broncos and Regina Pats is shaping up to be a fiery affair.
A first-round matchup between the two East Division rivals was locked into place Friday night after the Pats defeated the Broncos by a 3-2 margin in overtime, ensuring Regina of a third-place finish in the East Division. Prior to Friday, the Brandon Wheat Kings remained in the race for the third seed while the Broncos had the No. 2 slot firmly in their possession.
Friday's outing was a raucous one, with heavy hits and feisty exchanges from start to finish.
Fans from out east will remember a wild second-round meeting between these two squads during the 2017 WHL Playoffs - a best-of-seven set that went the distance as the high-flying Pats erased a 3-1 series deficit to advance to the Eastern Conference Championship.
The Broncos, led by Calgary Flames prospect Glenn Gawdin - who is enjoying a career campaign with 125 points (56G-69A) - will look to corral reigning WHL Player of the Year Sam Steel (33-50-83) and the Regina Pats.
Game 1 between the Broncos and Pats goes at the Credit Union i-Plex in Swift Current on Friday, March 23 at 7 p.m. MT. Round One is sponsored by SWT.
