Swift Current Broncos News Release
SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (3-7-2-1) played a solid game against the Medicine Hat Tigers (4-6-1-1) Friday night, and were finally rewarded for their efforts with a 3-2 win.
Swift Current's penalty kill went to work early in the game as Josh Davies was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct after a knee-on-knee hit with Noah Danielson.
The Broncos penalty kill did an excellent job of limiting the Tigers opportunities on the five-minute power play and killing it off without surrendering a goal.
Shortly after the power play the Broncos opened the scoring. Raphael Pelletier had the puck below the Tigers goal line and centered for Josh Filmon who beat Garin Bjorklund on the glove side to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead late in the period.
The lead didn't last long as just 1:08 later Corson Hopwo blocked a shot at his own blue line and came in on a breakaway, beating Isaac Poulter under the blocker to tie the game at one heading into the first intermission.
Neither team scored in the middle frame although both had plenty of opportunities. Hopwo had a pair of breakaways, missing the net on the first and being denied by Poulter on the second.
After the period buzzer sounded, Daniel Baker cross checked Caleb Wyrostok in the face giving the Broncos a four-minute power play to start the second period.
Mathew Ward fired a shot from the high slot through traffic giving the Broncos a 2-1 lead just 55 seconds into the third period. Rayan Bettahar and Cole Nagy picked up assists on the goal.
Poulter continued to stand tall during the third period, denying Hopwo and Oasiz Wiesblatt on breakway chances to keep the Broncos lead intact.
With Bjorklund on the bench for the extra attacker, the Broncos cleared the puck down the ice and into the Tigers zone. Bogdans Hodass was the last man back to pick it up but had Caleb Wyrostok right behind him.
Wyrostok forced Hodass into the boards and Hodass put the puck into his own net trying to clear it away, giving the Broncos a 3-1 lead. Owen MacNeil scored with 44 seconds remaining to cut the lead down to 3-2, but the Broncos held on and ended their 10-game losing streak with the victory.
Swift Current is back in action Saturday night as they welcome the Lethbridge Hurricanes (5-6-0-0) to the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.
Announced attendance was 1,270.
