Wheat Kings Fall to Rebels

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB - The Brandon Wheat Kings dropped a 5-3 decision to the Red Deer Rebels on Friday night, dropping their record to 5-8-0-0 on the season.
Rylen Roersma scored twice, but it was too little too late for the Wheat Kings who found themselves in a 4-1 hole early in the third period.
"I liked our start tonight, but then in the second, we started making soft plays," said Head Coach Don MacGillivray. "We were turning pucks over in our own zone and we spent a lot of time in the defensive zone. Red Deer is a good club. they play hard, they play with structure and they took it to us."
The Wheat Kings started the game well, and lead 1-0 after one, but early in the second period Ethan Kruger left the game after a collsion with Arshdeep Bains. At the time, Kruger had kicked aside all 17 shots he'd faced. Carson Bjarnason came on in relief and kicked aside 23 of 27 shots he faced.
"When you try and make fancy, soft play out of your own zone it's usually a recipe for disaster," added MacGillivray. "It's frustrating. We were in a good spot at the first intermission. We didn't really dig in when Ethan got hurt either. When things go wrong we have to battle through it and respond better than we did."
Marcus Kallionkielli scored his first goal in a Wheat Kings sweater since 2019, and added an assist for a two point night but the last ditch effort was not enough to draw even and the rebels sealed it with an empty netter.
The Wheat Kings head to Regina Saturday night to take on the Pats. Catch the game on Bounce 96.1, The iHeartRadio app or Watch.CHL.ca Pre game starts at 7:45pm MB time - Puck drop at 8pm.
