Tigers Fall 3-2 in Swift Current
November 6, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
The Tigers and Broncos renewed their rivalry as the two teams battled for the fourth time this season on Friday night in Swift Current. The Broncos hold the edge in the season series having won two of the three previous games.
The Broncos opened the scoring late in the first period when Raphael Pelletier found Josh Filmon in front of the net for his 4th of the season. The Tigers would respond just over a minute later though. After a draw in the defensive zone, Corson Hopwo forced a turnover at the blue line and sped down the left side on a breakaway. He beat the goalie with a low wrister on the blocker side for his 5th of the season to tie the game.
The Tigers dominated play in the second period outshooting the Broncos 10-2 in the frame. Despite the shot advantage, the Tigers weren't able to capitalize and the game headed to the third still even at a goal apiece.
Swift Current made the most of an early power play to start the third period. Mathew Ward sent a point shot through traffic for his 5th of the season less than a minute into the third. The Tigers continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone and put up another eight shots in the frame. Down a goal with two minutes remaining, the Tigers decided to pull the goalie for the extra attacker. Unfortunately, the puck took a bad bounce in the defensive end and Caleb Wyrostok was awarded with his third on the empty net goal. The extra attacker would pay off though with 44 seconds remaining. Owen MacNeil grabbed a rebound and put the puck just under the crossbar for his 2nd as a Tiger. Bogdans Hodass and Lukas Svejkovsky added to their season totals picking up the assists on the goal. Unfortunately for the Tigers, time would expire before they could tie up the game and force overtime.
Garin Bjorklund (2-5-1-0) got the start between the pipes for the Tigers. He saved 20 of the 22 shots he faced in the loss.
