The Full 60
The Winterhawks corrected their slow-start issue with a four-goal first period on Friday night, which ultimately helped them weather the Kelowna storm in the third period. Tonight's focus will need to be on not only starting hot once more, but ensuring that there is no let-off in the second or third periods should they grab the lead against a confident Vancouver team. The Hawks found success with relentless forechecking and a determination to get the puck on net, a recipe for success if they can keep it up for all three periods.
Giants Standing Tall
Speaking of Vancouver, the Giants will look to keep what has been a strong start going as they put their 5-2-1 record on the line against Portland. They enter the matchup having won three straight at home, including a 3-1 decision over the Prince George Cougars last night. Vancouver also just fortified an already impressive club with two new additions via trade. Defensemen Alex Cotton and Evan Toth joined the Giants from Lethbridge and Calgary, respectively, and could both debut against the Winterhawks.
Finally At Full Strength
It hasn't been the smoothest of sailing for Portland to start the year, but last night marked the first time all season that the team played with 12 healthy forwards in the lineup, and it showed. Talent on all four lines helped the Hawks race out to an early lead, and that depth provides a completely new dimension to the team's attack. Sprinkle in the NHL-caliber skills of players like Jaydon Dureau, Cross Hanas, Tyson Kozak and more, and you've got a team that can skate with anyone in the WHL.
