ALLENTOWN, P.A. - Taylor Beck and Joe Whitney scored while Christopher Gibson had to make just 22 stops as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers ended their five-game winless slide against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Saturday night at PPL Center.

Despite allowing a power play goal, the penalty kill was superb for Bridgeport, going 8-for-9 on the night and helping the Sound Tigers to the win.

The first period consisted largely of penalty killing for the Sound Tigers, with Gibson coming up huge on multiple occasions. The kill went 4-for-4 in the opening frame and Gibson made a massive stop on former Sound Tiger Colin McDonald who was alone on the doorstep.

Beck scored the only goal of the first, coming out of the box and rifling a wrist shot over the glove of Phantoms netminder Anthony Stolarz to make it a 1-0 game. Bracken Kearns and Jared Gomes picked up assists on Beck's eighth goal of the season.

In a relatively uneventful second period, it looked as if there would be no scoring in the middle frame, but Bridgeport got another with just 39 seconds left in the period. Sebastian Collberg brought the puck in on a 3-on-1 on a broken play and found Whitney, who buried his 12th goal of the season to make it a 2-0 lead for the Sound Tigers.

Lehigh Valley broke through on their ninth and final power play of the night with just one second remaining on their man advantage. It was Robert Hagg, firing through a screen, beating Gibson over the glove to make it a 2-1 game.

The Phantoms could not get anything else on Gibson after scoring with 6:30 left and the Sound Tigers held on for the victory.

Bridgeport's power play got six chances of its own, but could not beat Stolarz who made 27 saves in the game.

The Sound Tigers return home tomorrow to face off against the Providence Bruins. Puck drop is set for 5:00 p.m.
