Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

HERSHEY, Pa. - Three early first period goals by the Hershey Bears' were too much for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to overcome in both teams' first game back from the holiday break, as the Penguins fell to their Atlantic Division rival, 5-0, on Saturday night at Giant Center.

It was the first time the Penguins were shut out during the 2015-16 campaign, and the first time Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was blanked since Apr. 17, 2015.

Aaron Ness opened the scoring for Hershey 34 seconds into the first period with his second goal of the season.

Fifty-nine seconds after Ness scored, Chris Brown netted his second goal of the season and gave the Bears a 2-0 lead.

Rookie defenseman Madison Bowey chipped in on the power play for his second goal of the year, lifting Hershey's lead to 3-0 at 10:55 of the opening frame.

Paul Carey scored the Bears' second power play goal on their second man advantage of the game 10:03 into the third period, putting Hershey up, 4-0.

Hershey finished the game two-for-four on the power play, while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was unable to convert on five man advantages.

Erik Burgdoerfer brought the score to 5-0 by scoring 1:19 after Carey's power play marker.

Brian Foster, who was coming off of his first career AHL shutout a week ago at Syracuse, was replaced at the start of the third period by rookie goalie Casey DeSmith. Foster made 16 saves on 21 shots and DeSmith finished out the game stopping all seven pucks sent his way.

The Bears' Dan Ellis was able to fend off a late flurry by the Penguins and recorded his first shutout of the season with 22 saves.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton returns to home ice for its next game on Sunday afternoon against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Sunday's game is the fifth meeting of the season between the Penguins and Phantoms, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton holding the 3-1-0-0 season series edge, including two consecutive shutouts.

Game time between the Penguins and Phantoms is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
