December 26, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - In front of 12,957 Monsters fans, the largest crowd at The Q for a hockey game this season, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters fell to the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday by a final score of 7-3. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 15-9-2-2 overall this season and with a .607 points percentage, remain alone in fourth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
The Griffins started quickly on Saturday as Andy Miele made it 1-0 Grand Rapids just 21 seconds into the game before Oliver Bjorkstrand pounded home his third marker of the season for the Monsters at even strength at 2:19 on feeds from Ryan Craig and T.J. Tynan. Grand Rapids tacked on back-to-back Colin Campbell scores to end the frame though, at 8:20 and 18:05 respectively, to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
In the second, Jeff Hoggan pushed the Griffins advantage to 4-1 just ten seconds into the period before Joe Devin converted the Monsters' first penalty shot of the season at 2:41 for his first goal in a Lake Erie uniform, a tally that made it 4-2 Griffins. Grand Rapids responded with an Eric Tangradi goal at 18:12 of the second, but Josh Anderson drew the Monsters within a pair with his eighth of the season, an even-strength score assisted by Kerby Rychel and Michael Chaput at 18:48.
In the final period, the Griffins tacked on two more, from Martin Frk at 9:10 and a Campbell hat-trick goal at 10:55 to establish a 7-3 Grand Rapids margin of victory and push the Griffins' franchise-record winning streak to 15 consecutive games.
Monsters starter Anton Forsberg was pulled early in the second period after allowing four goals on nine shots, giving way to Brad Thiessen, who made eight saves on 11 shots faced in relief for Lake Erie. Jared Coreau registered the win in net for Grand Rapids by virtue of a 26 save performance.
