Ontario, CA - The Ontario Reign, proud American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL), visit the San Diego Gulls tonight at 7:05 p.m. PT at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California. Tonight is the fifth of 12 meetings between the two teams this season.
Top Teams Clash:
The Ontario Reign (1st place, Pacific Division) roll into tonight's contest on a six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-0-1) while the Gulls (2nd place, Pacific Division) look to extend a three-game winning streak.
Family Feud:
The Reign and Gulls are among the top three teams in the American Hockey League in average penalty minutes per game. The Gulls rank second with 20.52 penalty minutes per game while the Reign stand third with 17.91 penalty minutes per game.
Unwrapping the Special Teams:
The Gulls boast the best power play in the AHL at 24.3 percent (26 goals on 107 opportunities) and face the Western Conference's top penalty kill in the Ontario Reign at 88.8 percent (13 goals against on 116 opportunities).
Backman Stands Tall:
Forward Sean Backman enters tonight's game on a three-game point steak (one goal, two assists) and is tied for first in the AHL with four game-winning goals.
Budaj Backstops Reign:
Goaltender Peter Budaj started the last nine games for the Reign and allowed only one goal in six of those contests. Budaj leads the AHL with a 1.49 goals-against average.
