Providence Bruins News Release
The Providence Bruins announced today that center Brad Boyes has been named an AHL Second-Team All-Star. Boyes, who turns 22 on April 17, ranks sixth in league scoring with 30-37-67 totals in 71 games. He was acquired by the Boston Bruins from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for former P-Bruin Jeff Jillson on March 9. The trade occurred two days after he made his NHL debut with the Sharks. Boyes has 5-2-7 totals and a +5 rating in 10 games with the P-Bruins since the trade.
Boyes, a 6'1", 195-pound native of Mississauga, Ontario, is playing in his second professional season. He was originally selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs with their first pick, 24th overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Boyes spent most of the 2002-03 season with Toronto's AHL affiliate, the St. John's Maple Leafs, posting 23-28-51 totals in 65 games. He represented the Leafs on the Canadian Team at the 2003 AHL All-Star Classic.
Boyes was traded by Toronto to San Jose on March 5, 2003, as part of a deal for Owen Nolan. After the trade, he posted 7-6-13 totals in 15 games with the Sharks' AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Barons. Boyes was named to the 2002-03 AHL All-Rookie Team, as his goal (30) and point (64) totals ranked second among AHL rookies.
Boyes received several awards while playing junior hockey for the Erie Otters (OHL). He played in the Canadian Hockey League's 2000 Top Prospects Game, on the same team as Bruin teammate Kris Vernarsky (also a 2000 Draft pick by Toronto). He was also named an OHL Second-Team All-Star in 2000-01, and an OHL First-Team All-Star in 2001-02. Boyes was the OHL's Most Valuable Player in both the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons, and was named a CHL Second-Team All-Star in 2001-02. He was also the CHL's Scholastic Player of the Year in 1999-2000, and was the league's Sportsman of the Year in 2001-02.
The Bruins return to action on Friday, April 2 at 7:05 p.m., when they host the Springfield Falcons. They also host the Hartford Wolf Pack on Sunday, April 4 at 4:05 p.m. Friday's game will be televised live on COX-3, with Corey Masse (play-by-play) and Bob Norton (analyst) calling all the action.
