Albany River Rats News Release
Albany N.Y. â The Albany River Rats today announced that April 9th & 10th, 2004 will be designated as Verizon Wireless Hopeline Collection Days. All fans attending either the 7:00pm, Friday game against the Philadelphia Phantoms, or the 4:00pm contest versus Syracuse Crunch on Saturday are urged to bring their no-longer used wireless phones and drop them in the Verizon Wireless Hopeline Collection bins. The phones will be donated to Albany-based Equinox, Inc., to support programs aimed at curtailing domestic violence in the Capital Region. In appreciation of their generosity, all cell phone donors will be given chances to win a variety of raffle prizes.
"The River Rats are committed to the fight against domestic violence here in the Capital District, and on a national level, and partnering with the Verizon Wireless Hopeline is another way to continue our tradition of serving the community," River Rats President and CEO S. Garen Szablewski said. "Last year's Hopeline drive set a strong benchmark, but we're confident our fans can help us surpass it this year."
Fans can drop off cell phones from any wireless carrier in the Verizon Wireless Hopeline bins at either game. Everyone to donate a phone will be entered into a raffle with prizes from Verizon Wireless, the Albany River Rats, and River Rats' sponsors including NY Lottery, Advance Auto Parts, Lebanon Valley and Fonda Speedways.
The Verizon Wireless Hopeline is a program that provides wireless services and equipment to assist survivors of domestic violence in the event of a challenging situation. Through Hopeline, no-longer used wireless phones are collected, refurbished, recycled and eventually programmed to directly dial 911 and other emergency services for women of Crime Victim and Domestic Violence Victim organizations. Proceeds from the sale of any donated phones are used to fund non-profit agencies and to purchase phones for survivors of domestic violence. Hopeline also donates funds to non-profit domestic violence organizations to assist with building awareness & prevention of the national epidemic.
The Albany River Rats, in their 11th season as a member of the American Hockey League, are owned and operated by Capital District Sports Inc., and serve as the primary affiliate of the Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils. River Rats games can be heard on Moon Radio AM 1160 WABY with a simulcast available on Talk 1240 AM WVKZ.
