Connecticut Whale News Release
Hartford, April 1, 2004 - Players around the American Hockey League agree. Hartford Wolf Pack netminder Jason LaBarbera is simply the best. Today, the AHL announced its first and second All-Star teams, and LaBarbera was ranked the number one goalie by his peers and the AHL sports media.
Wolf Pack Head Coach Ryan McGill says the award is indicative of LaBarbera's play all year. "Jason's been there for us the entire season, he's steady as a rock and makes the big play when it counts. We're looking for big things out of him in the playoffs."
LaBarbera makes a point of recognizing his teammates' efforts. "The guys in front of me deserve a lot of the credit. For me, this really is a team award."
LaBarbera's record-setting season includes shattering the regular season shut-out record of nine, first set back in 1941-42. He has recorded back-to-back shutouts three times this season. As of today, LaBarbera has 12 to his credit.
The netminder also leads the league in games won with 30. He broke the Pack's franchise record with his 29th win, breaking J.F. Labbe's previous mark of 28 set in the 1998-99 season. The Burnaby, BC native also set a franchise record going unbeaten in 14 straight decisions (11-0-3) from January 30 to March 17 of this year.
As of today, the 24 year-old, third round draft pick (1998) has the third best goals against average in the league at 1.59, and has played in 54 games.
The AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack hockey club is part of Madison Square Garden LP. Cablevision Systems Corporation owns a controlling interest in MSG LP, which also includes the New York Rangers (NHL), New York Knicks (NBA), the New York Liberty (WNBA), the MSG Network, Fox Sports Net and the Madison Square Garden arena complex.
