WASHINGTON, DC – The Washington Capitals, the National Hockey League affiliate of the Portland Pirates, on Thursday recalled center Brooks Laich and right wing Garret Stroshein from the Pirates, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced.

The promotions follow today's announcement by the NHL that center Darcy Verot has been suspended for the final three games of the 2003-04 regular season for an elbowing incident March 30 versus the Pittsburgh Penguins that resulted in a major penalty in the third period.

Laich, 20, has played 60 games between Binghamton and Portland in the AHL, totaling 16 goals and 18 assists with 24 penalty minutes, including one goal and eight minutes in penalties in 16 games for the Pirates.

The native of Wawota, Saskatchewan, played three games for Washington after being recalled March 12, picking up his first and only NHL point with an assist in his Capitals debut March 12 versus Chicago before being reassigned to the Pirates March 18.

Laich joined Washington February 18 in a trade that sent Peter Bondra to Ottawa. Laich was drafted by the Senators in the sixth round, 193rd overall, in the 2001 Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Senators February 3, 2003.

Stroshein, who will turn 24 April 4, has played 34 games for Portland this season, collecting one goal and one assist while recording 73 penalty minutes.

The 6'7", 245-pound native of Edmonton joined the Capitals as a free agent July 14, 2003. This season has marked his second with the Pirates, as he played 28 games for Portland in 2002-03, picking up one assist and 86 penalty minutes.

The Capitals return to action tonight when they visit the Boston Bruins for a 7:30 p.m. face-off.

The Pirates will host two home games this weekend. On Friday, they host the Worcester IceCats at 7:05 p.m. On Saturday, it's "Hockey Night in Portland" as the Pirates welcome the Providence Bruins at 7:05 p.m.

The Pirates now offer a $6 ticket for all remaining home games. They are on sale at the Civic Center box office and all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be ordered by phone at (207) 775-3458, (207) 775-3331 or on-line at Ticketmaster.com.
