Houston Aeros vs. Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, 4/1
Five things you absolutely need to know before reading any further â
Aeros centerman Mark Cullen has helped raise $750 for "Sunshine Kids", which helps children struck with cancer and their families. An anonymous donor is giving $100 per Cullen goal and $50 per assist to the organization. Cullen, who was diagnosed with malignant melanoma last fall, has two and 11 assists since the campaign started March 5.
The Aeros' magic number to qualify for the post-season is seven points, a combination of their own points gained and points lost by San Antonio. The magic number could shrink to five points with a victory tonight. Houston enters tonight's game three points ahead of fifth-place Cincinnati, which has two games in hand. The top five teams from the West make the post-season, with the No. 4 seed hosting a three-game qualifying series with the No. 5 seed. Houston's magic number for home ice in the qualifying round is 10 points, and that could shrink to six with a regulation win tonight.
Cincinnati is 7-13-3-0 in its last 23 games since pulling within one game of the .500 mark February 14 versus Manitoba.
Houston is unbeaten in regulation in eight straight games (6-0-1-1) versus teams with a sub .500 record.
The Aeros are 4-for-45 (8.9 percent) on the power play over their last eight games, including 0-for-12 the last two. The penalty kill has also been a problem. Houston has allowed nine power play goals on 29 chances (31.0 percent goal rate) in the last six games.
Ducks at Aeros (Aeros lead series 7-3-2-1 all-time, Aeros lead 4-1-1-0 at Houston)
Tonight is the 14th all-time meeting between the teams, seventh in Houston.
The Aeros are 2-2-1-0 this season against Cincinnati and 7-2-2-0 in the last 11 meetings overall.
Houston has outscored Cincinnati 6-2 in the third period of their five meetings this season.
The Ducks have been outchanced 31-18 in power plays in the season series.
In the last meeting January 27 at Toyota Center, Joel Perrault and Pierre Parenteau scored 1:38 apart late in the second period as the Ducks beat the Aeros for the first time in Houston, 3-1.
Cincinnati has three regulation wins in 14 games against Houston â a 5-1 decision in the first ever meeting on January 20, 2002, a 4-2 victory December 29 and a 3-1 win January 27.
The Aeros are 4-1-1-0 all-time at home versus the Ducks, but had a three-game winning streak snapped in the last game.
Tonight is the sixth of eight meetings this season. The Aeros play the Ducks three times in a span of nine days, capped off by their final visit of the season to Cincinnati Gardens next Friday.

Last game â Tony Hrkac and Simon Gamache each scored power play goals and Brian Finley turned aside 27 shots, as the Milwaukee Admirals beat the Houston Aeros 3-1 at Toyota Center. Vern Fiddler also scored for Milwaukee, which snapped a two-game skid to move to an AHL-best 96 points, six clear of second-place Grand Rapids in the West. The Admirals went 8-1-1-0 this season against the Aeros, including a perfect 5-0-0-0 mark at Toyota Center, and were unbeaten in the final nine meetings (8-0-1-0). Jeff Hoggan scored and Kyle Kettles made 23 saves for the Aeros, who fell for the first time in five games (3-1-1-0).
Scouting the Aeros â Houston, 8-4-2-1 in its last 15, hopes to continue its march towards a Calder Cup playoff spot tonight. The Aeros are still playing without leading scorer Stephane Veilleux (12-26=38), who was recalled to Minnesota February 27. Rickard Wallin (14-17=31) and defenseman Zbynek Michalek (5-14=19) have since joined Veilleux with the Wild. Defenseman Travis Roche (8-30=38) has vaulted into a tie with Veilleux for the team's scoring lead, but he missed two games last week due to injury. Roche is one point up on Kyle Wanvig (23-14=37) and five ahead of Dan Cavanaugh (13-20=33) and Jeff Hoggan (20-14=34), who has six goals in his last seven games. Last season's Calder Cup Most Valuable Player, goalie Johan Holmqvist, played 59 of the team's first 74 games, going 23-27-7 with a 2.56 goals against average and three shutouts before getting injured. Kyle Kettles, in his first year in the AHL, is 4-8-5 with a 2.58 goals against average but has deserved a better fate. In 16 starts, the Aeros have scored 29 goals in front of the rookie netminder. Kettles is backed up by Frederic Cloutier, who is 0-2-0 with a 4.60 goals against average. Cloutier has spent most of the 2003-04 season with ECHL Louisiana.
Scouting the Mighty Ducks â Cincinnati avenged a 2-0 loss to San Antonio to open its four-game Texas swing with a 3-2 victory over the Rampage Tuesday. The Mighty Ducks, who rallied from a two-goal deficit for the win, are 3-1-2-0 in their last six. Tuesday, Tony Martensson posted a goal and two assists, as he had a hand in each goal. Keith Aucoin (18-27=45) and the Swede Martensson (15-30=45) are tied for the team scoring lead. Defenseman Chris Armstrong, who played three games with the Minnesota Wild in 2000-01, is the third leading scorer on the team with 42 points (8-34=42). Ilya Bryzgalov is a workhorse netminder, playing in 59 games with a record of 26-24-7 and a goals against average of 2.24. His backup is Frenchman Eddy Ferhi, who is 2-11-3 with a 3.11 goals against average.
Aeros/Ducks connections â
Houston president Tom Garrity served in the same capacity with Cincinnati prior to this season.
Cincinnati's Mike Mottau was a teammate of Houston goalie Johan Holmqvist for most of three seasons, from 2000-2003, in Hartford. Mottau also spent time in Saint John last season alongside current Aero Jan Vodrazka.
Mighty Ducks defenseman Chris Armstrong spent one season in the Wild organization. He played 77 games with Cleveland in 2000-01 under head coach Todd McLellan, and also saw action in three games with Minnesota that season, his only three NHL games.
Houston's Kyle Wanvig and Cincinnati's Joel Stepp each played for WHL Red Deer in 1999-2000 and 2000-01, and they helped the Rebels to a Memorial Cup title.
Cincinnati's Tony Martensson played two seasons with Brynas IF Gavle of the Swedish Elite League. That same team produced Houston netminder Johan Holmqvist in 2000.
Houston's Maxime Fortunus played alongside Cincinnati's Joel Perrault with QMJHL Baie-Comeau from 2000-2003.
Aeros' four-game unbeaten streak snapped â
Houston's 3-1 loss to Milwaukee on Sunday snapped its four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1). Still, the Aeros are 8-4-2-1 over their last 15 games (.633 win pct).
Houston has 13 wins in its last 44 games (13-19-10-2), but is two games above the .500 mark the last 54 games (22-20-10-2).
The Aeros' 13-game winless streak (0-5-7-1) December 27-January 23 was five more than their previous franchise record eight-game streak (0-6-1-1), November 20-December 3 of this season.
Houston ran off a season-high seven straight games without a loss (3-0-4-0) December 20-January 2, including four straight ties December 27-January 2.
The Aeros won six straight December 5-17, outscoring their opponents 18-6 in the process.
In the season's first 20 games, Houston allowed a league-worst 3.40 goals per game. In the last 56 games, the Aeros have yielded just 2.52 goals per game. The defensive streak has helped Houston move out of the basement to 2.74 goals against per game, tied for 17th in the AHL.
Playoff picture still fuzzy â The Aeros are inching closer to a playoff spot with 70 points, three more than fifth-place Cincinnati, seven better than Utah and 10 up on San Antonio in the West, which qualifies five teams for the Calder Cup Playoffs. There are five games (four remaining) this week that involve two of the four teams to start clearing the situation up. The Mighty Ducks, who have two games in hand on Houston, beat San Antonio 3-2 Tuesday, are here tonight and tomorrow and then in Milwaukee on Saturday. The Grizzlies, who have one game in hand on the Aeros, play host to San Antonio Friday and Saturday. San Antonio, which has five games in hand on Houston, couldn't hold a two-goal lead versus Cincinnati Tuesday, then started a seven-game road trip last night with a 4-1 loss in Chicago. The Rampage continues on tomorrow and Saturday in Utah, then Sunday in Chicago. The Aeros' magic number to qualify for the post-season is seven points, a combination of their points gained and points lost by San Antonio.

Houston/Cincinnati (3 total, 2 at HOU, 1 at CIN) â 4/1, 4/2 at HOU; 4/9 at CIN
San Antonio/Utah (3 total, 1 at SAN, 2 at UTA) â 4/10 at SAN; 4/2, 4/3 at UTA
And down the stretch they come â Houston has just four games remaining, playing twice in each of the next two weeks. Each of the Aeros' four remaining games is against the West Division, including three in a row versus Cincinnati. Houston is 20-24-9-2 against the West this season, including a 10-10-3-1 mark in the last 24 games.
April good to the Aeros â Houston has played at a .661 clip in franchise history in the month of April, going 33-15-8-0. The Aeros are 6-1-0-0 in April over the past two seasons, and 11-3-0-0 in the last three campaigns.
Home cookin' â The Aeros are 4-1-1-0 in their last six at home, and have also gone 8-4-1-0 in the last 13 at Toyota Center since falling 3-1 to Cincinnati January 27. Houston plays three of its final four games at home.
The Aeros are averaging 3.30 goals per game over the last 10 home games, in which they are 6-3-1-0.
Houston started off its first season in Toyota Center just 2-6-1-1 but has improved to 17-12-6-2 at its new home. In the last 27 Toyota Center games, the Aeros have only five regulation losses and are 15-6-5-1.
Houston's season-best, nine-game home unbeaten streak was snapped January 8 in a 1-0 overtime loss to Hartford.
"O" exploding â
The Aeros are averaging 3.06 goals per game in the last 18 games to improve to 2.46 goals per game, 17th in the AHL.
The Aeros have scored five goals in five of their last 14 games.
Houston has scored two goals or less in 44 of 76 games (57.9 percent) this season.
That's more like it â Coming into last week, the Aeros had yielded 37.7 shots over their last three games. That total was nearly 10 shots over Houston's season average (28.1), which ranks ninth of the AHL. The Aeros have responded over the last three games, allowing only 23.7 shots per game.
New faces getting the chance â The Aeros could play as many as nine players tonight that weren't with the team just a month ago due to call-ups and injuries. Three of the players â Chad Starling, Ryan Wade and Kevin Marsh are all looking for their first action with Houston. Starling was recalled from ECHL Peoria late Saturday, but failed to arrive in time for Sunday's game due to airplane problems. Wade and Marsh were signed yesterday from the University of Alberta, where they just finished a 40-2-2 season. Wade's 66 points (38-28=66) earned him Canada West Player of the Year honors, while Marsh posted 55 points (24-31=55), second on the team to Wade. The pair combined to help the Golden Bears to a 179-27-21 mark over the past five seasons. Jordan Krestanovich, Billy Tibbetts, Ben Storey, Maxime Fortunus, Ed McGrane and Frederic Cloutier are the other Aeros added in the past four weeks.
Hoggan starts another streakâ
Aeros right winger Jeff Hoggan had his five-game goal streak snapped last Saturday, but he rebounded with a goal the next night against Milwaukee. Hoggan has six goals in the last seven games and eight in the last 11.
Hoggan's five-game goal streak tied Kyle Wanvig for the team season-high, and Wanvig and several others for the AHL season-high.
The rugged winger has 34 points (20+14=34), and his 20 goals are second on the team. In his rookie season in 2002-03, Hoggan totaled just 11 points (6+5=11).
In his last 18 games, Hoggan has posted a negative plus-minus rating just once, and he is plus-14 in that span to move to plus-four on the season, joining Mark Cullen as the only Aeros regulars above the break even point.
Hoggan is tied for second on the team with three game-winning goals.
The Aeros are 16-6-5-2 when Hoggan notches a point and 9-6-3-2 when he scores a goal.
Wanvig reaches 20-goal mark â Aeros right wing Kyle Wanvig has gotten to the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his pro career. Wanvig, who scored his 20th February 28 against San Antonio, picked up No. 23 March 23 against Utah. Wanvig has 38 total points between Houston and Minnesota, and 37 alone with the Aeros (23+14=37). Wanvig's previous career-high for goals was 14 combined (13 with Houston) last season, when he had 30 points, 29 with the Aeros.
Foy has points in four of five â Houston rookie Matt Foy has a goal and three assists in his last five games, and he has posted eight points (4-4=8) in 14 games since returning from a month-long bout with mononucleosis February 27. Foy is the Aeros' leading rookie with 23 points (11-12=23).
Kettles gets 25th pro win â
Rookie goalie Kyle Kettles made 18 saves last Saturday for his 25th professional win, counting 21 last season with ECHL Louisiana. Kettles was making his first start in 10 games.
Tonight Kettles is expected to make his third straight start for the first time this season.
Kettles snapped an eight appearance winless streak (0-3-5) by making 26 saves in a 5-2 win in San Antonio February 27.
Kettles made a season-best 34 saves March 5 but fell 3-1 to Grand Rapids.
Kettles was 2-0-4 with a 0.95 goals against average and a .960 save percentage in six starts from December 23-January 17, dropping his goals against average from 3.65 to 2.19.
The netminder picked up his first AHL shutout by making 20 saves in a January 9 game versus Worcester. Unfortunately for Kettles, his team didn't score either and he had to settle for a tie.
The Aeros scored just 12 goals in his first 10 games this season, but they have 17 goals in his last six starts.
Kettles unbeaten in two versus Ducks â Aeros netminder Kyle Kettles is 1-0-1 with a 1.44 goals against average in two games against Cincinnati in this, his rookie season. Kettles posted 33 saves as the teams battled to a 2-2 tie January 2, after making 24 saves in a 2-1 Aeros win December 20. Frederic Cloutier hasn't faced the Ducks.
Bryzgalov 2-6-1 versus Aeros â Mighty Ducks netminder Ilya Bryzgalov has not fared well against Houston in his career. The Russia native is 2-6-1 with a 2.76 goals against average in nine games versus the Aeros, although two of those victories have come this season. Bryzgalov snapped a five-game losing streak against Houston by making 22 saves in a 4-2 win December 19. He is 2-2-1 with a good 1.97 goals against average this season versus the Aeros.
The race to 40 â It's been a balanced offensive attack this season for the Aeros, who have 12 players with at least 20 points. Houston currently has two players (Stephane Veilleux, Travis Roche) who are tied for the team lead with 38 points with four games remaining. Veilleux is in Minnesota. No AHL team in the last 10 seasons has had zero players reach the 40-point mark. Norfolk's leading scorer this season, Ajay Baines, has 39 points. Since 1994-95, six teams have had players in the 40's, but not reach a 50-point scorer. The last were Springfield (49) and Lowell (43) last season.
Beckett enjoys first two-point night in three-plus seasons â Converted defenseman Jason Beckett posted his third career two-point game Saturday, and his first since December 30, 2000, in his rookie season with Philadelphia against Hershey. Beckett, whose four goals this season are an AHL high, has certainly taken advantage of his increased ice time lately. Beckett has three points (2-1=3) in his last four games, and he had three goals in March. Beckett has four goals in his last 24 games, after going without one in the season's first 34 games.
The youth shall lead them â Houston's "kids" are leading the way in 2003-04. Through 76 games, roughly half of the Aeros' scoring has come from players in their first or second year in the North American pro game. Of Houston's 506 scoring points, 254 (50.2 percent) have come from players in either their first or second season in North America, while 252 (49.9 percent) have come from players born in 1980 or after. Five of the team's eight top scorers were born during the Reagan administration.
Career highs all around â You'd be hard pressed to find an Aero who hasn't set at least one AHL career-high in 2003-04. Among them: Johan Holmqvist (59 games played, 3467 minutes, 2.56 goals against average); Erik Reitz (19 assists, 23 points); Zbynek Michalek (5 goals, 14 assists, 19 points); Marc Cavosie (10 goals, 20 assists, 30 points); Dan Cavanaugh (13 goals tie career high, 21 assists, 34 points); Kevin Mitchell (5 goals, 16 assists, 21 points); Jeff Hoggan (20 goals, 14 assists, 34 points); Stephane Veilleux (13 AHL goals tie career high, 25 assists, 38 points); Kyle Wanvig (23 goals, 37 points); Jason Beckett (4 goals, 148 PIM's).
Aeros still winless in OT â The Aeros, winless at 0-4-12 in overtime, have played just four extra sessions since needing overtime in eight of 10 games from December 27-January 17. Houston is the lone AHL team without an overtime win after Utah won twice in late February in the extra session, and just one team (Cleveland) has only one overtime win. The last teams to go through a season without an overtime win were Hamilton and Hartford last season. The Aeros went 8-3-7 in overtime in 2002-03, second in the league in extra session wins (Chicago, 11). The Aeros' 12 ties are one off the AHL lead (Portland). Grand Rapids (6-0-8) and San Antonio (7-0-8) are without a loss in overtime this season.
Aeros have first goal in 10 of 14 games â Houston has scored the game's first goal in 10 of its last 14 games, but in two of the last five. The Aeros are 20-8-6-2 overall when scoring first.
But when not scoring first... - The Aeros are 7-25-5-2 when allowing the game's first goal and picked up their first road win in such situations (1-16-4-0) March 21 in Norfolk. The game marked the first time all season Houston has trailed on the road at any point in a game and emerged victorious. The Aeros trailed 2-0 March 27 against San Antonio and won, the first time this season they've rallied from two goals down for a win.
Houston has five wins when allowing more than one goal - The Aeros are an unbeaten in regulation 22-0-3-1 when allowing one or zero goals this season, and they five wins (5-33-9-3) when yielding two or more.
Not comeback artists â Houston is one of four AHL teams without a win when trailing after two periods (0-27-6-1). The Aeros became the last team to record a win when trailing after one period (1-22-3-2) when they rallied for a 5-3 win March 21 in Norfolk. Last season, the Aeros were second in the AHL with six wins when trailing after two periods. Grand Rapids led the circuit with seven.
Penalty kill update â
The Aeros' overall 85.0 percent penalty kill rate (294-346) is 16th in the AHL, after spending much of season in the upper half of the top 10.
Houston killed off its first 31 shorthanded chances this season. Since then, opponents are 52-for-315 (16.5 percent) on the power play.
Opponents are 17-for-80 (21.3 percent) on the power play over the last 18 games and have scored 23 man-advantage goals in the last 25 games.
Houston has allowed nine power play goals on 29 chances (31.0 percent goal rate) in the last six games.
The Aeros have yielded no power play goals in 38 of their 76 games, and have points in all but nine of those games (16-9-9-4).
Cincinnati ranks 27th in the league on the power play at 11.4 percent, including 10.7 percent on the road, and has given up an AHL worst 14 shorthanded goals â 10 on the road.
The Ducks are 6-for-42 (14.3 percent) on the power play over their last seven games, but 0-for-10 in the last two.
Cincinnati is 2-for-18 (11.1 percent) on the power play this season against Houston. The Ducks have been outchanced 31-18 in power plays in the season series.
Power play update â
Houston enters tonight's game 52 of 419 on the power play (12.4 percent), 23rd among 28 AHL teams.
The Aeros have gone 39-for-276 (14.1 percent) since Matt Foy snapped a streak of 37 straight unsuccessful power plays December 5, raising their percentage from a season-low 8.3 to 12.4.
The Aeros are 4-for-45 (8.9 percent) on the power play over their last eight games, including 0-for-12 the last two.
Houston's 419 power plays are the most in the AHL, 16 more than second-place Manitoba. The Aeros also led the league in 2002-03 with 514 chances.
The Aeros have only seven wins in 38 games (7-23-7-1) when not scoring a power-play goal.
Cincinnati ranks third in the league on the penalty kill at 88.5 percent, including an even better 89.0 percent on the road (third in the AHL). The Ducks have yielded just 19 man-advantage goals on the road in 36 games.
Despite the high ranking power play, Cincinnati has killed off just 22-of-29 shorthanded chances (75.9 percent) over its last seven games.
Houston is 3-for-31 (9.7 percent) on the power play this season against Cincinnati. The Aeros, however, are 0-for-9 in the last two meetings.
Houston at 76-game mark â The Aeros passed the official midway point of the season with a 14-15-8-3 mark and now sport a 27-33-12-4 record. Below is a breakdown of Houston's season so far in 10-game segments.
