(PHILADELPHIA, April 1, 2004) - John Slaney of the Philadelphia Phantoms, who broke the AHL record for most career goals by a defenseman in February, today was named an AHL Second Team All-Star for the 2003-04 season.

Despite missing 21 Phantoms games due to injuries and NHL call-ups this year, Slaney currently ties for the league lead among defensemen in goals (16), game-winning goals (4) and shorthanded goals (2). He also ranks second among AHL backliners in power-play goals (9), tied for sixth in points (42) and tied for 13th in assists (26).

Slaney, 32, made history on Feb. 21 in Hershey when he tallied the 125th goal of his AHL career, breaking Jim Wiemer's mark for most goals by a league defenseman. Slaney already owned the AHL record for most goals by a defenseman in a season with 30 in 1999-2000.

A two-time winner of the Eddie Shore Award for the top defenseman in the AHL, Slaney has appeared in four AHL All-Star Classics and is the event's all-time leading scorer with eight points. He was also named AHL First Team All-Star in 2000-01 and 2001-02.

This season, Slaney has helped Philadelphia compile a 43-24-6-1 record for 93 points, which is currently tops in the Eastern Conference. He has also anchored a young Phantoms defensive corps that ranks fifth in the league in goals allowed per game (2.11), third in shots allowed per game (25.54) and sixth in penalty killing (88.1 percent).

Also named as AHL Second Team All-Stars were Cleveland Barons defenseman Garrett Stafford, Manchester Monarchs right wing Pavel Rosa, Chicago Wolves left wing Steve Maltais, Providence Bruins center Brad Boyes and Bridgeport Sound Tigers goaltender Wade Dubielewicz.

The First Team is comprised of Manchester defenseman Bryan Muir, Milwaukee Admirals defenseman Curtis Murphy, Bridgeport right wing Jeff Hamilton, Binghamton Senators right wing Denis Hamel, Hershey Bears center Eric Perrin and Hartford Wolf Pack goaltender Jason LaBarbera.

Slaney and the Phantoms are back in action this Friday at 7:05 p.m. when they host the Hershey Bears at the Wachovia Spectrum. Philadelphia then plays at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Saturday before Sunday's regular-season home finale vs. the Binghamton Senators at 5:05 p.m.

Tickets to all Phantoms regular-season home games are $19, $18 and $14 for adults, and $8 for all children 14 and under, and are available now at the Wachovia Center box office and all Ticketmaster locations throughout the Delaware Valley.
