West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps broke up a scoreless tie with a late home run by Ulrich Bojarski and defeated the Peoria Chiefs 2-0 Monday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Bojarski's hitting heroics came just a day after he became the first Whitecaps player since Michael Hernandez in 2006 to Hit for the Cycle in a 9-5 loss at Burlington.

The opening game of a three-game series started as a pitcher's duel between the "Caps Garrett Hill and Peoria starter Kyle Leahy. Hill set down the Chiefs in order five of the first six innings. The only potential trouble for Hill came in the third. After hitting a batter and walking another, Hill escaped with two quick outs to end the threat. Leahy proved equally as tough, relinquishing only one hit through six innings of work. A Lars Nootbaar two-out single in the seventh finally broke up Hill's no-hit bid. As the scoreless tie entered the seventh, the Caps were able to reach Leahy. Johnny Valente started the inning with a single and Bojarski followed with a towering two-run home run to provide the Whitecaps the lead at 2-0. The "Caps wasted an opportunity later in the frame, leaving the bases loaded with none out. Whitecaps reliever Angel De Jesus carried the 2-0 "Caps lead into the ninth but loaded the bases with one out. De Jesus used a strikeout and a fly out to secure the victory and pick up his second save of the year.

The win represents the second straight shutout for the Whitecaps at Fifth Third Ballpark, with Hill the starter in both games. Hill (2-0) picked up the win and struck out six, allowing only one hit and one walk. His seven innings of work represent the longest outing of any "Caps starter in 2019 and extends his scoreless innings streak to 26 innings. De Jesus picked up his second save of the year. Leahy (1-2) took the loss, going a season-high six innings, allowing four hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. Valente recorded two of the "Caps four hits, and Nick Ames extended his hitting streak to nine games in the win. Both teams combined to go 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. West Michigan improves to 14-15 and looks to reach the .500 mark for the first time since April 13th. Peoria had won seven of their last eight but slipped to 13-15 with the loss.
