BlueClaws Walk-Off Winners 6-5 in 12 Innings Over Charleston

April 28, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws and Charleston RiverDogs were delayed 90 minutes and then played 12 innings Thursday night before Jim Murphy made the BlueClaws a winner by a score of 6-5. In a game that took 3 hours and 17 minutes, the BlueClaws bullpen was fantastic throwing 8 shutout innings and striking out 7 Charelston hitters. It was a game that was sloppy at times with Charleston committing 3 errors and Lakewood countering with 2 of their own.

BlueClaws SP Colby Shreve lasted just 4 innings (81), gave up 7 hits, struck out 4, and walked 3. He allowed 5 runs but only 1 of those runs was earned thanks to 2 errors in the 2nd inning which allowed Charleston to plate 4 runs in the stanza. Garett Claypool came in and relieved Shreve, and was nothing short of fantastic. He threw 61 pitches over 5 shutout innings, allowed just 3 hits, no walks, collected 4 strikeouts and gave up 0 runs. Eric Pettis and Chase Johnson combined to pitch 3 shutout innings, and Johnson picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the season.

Cameron Rupp and Jim Murphy each had 2 hits in the game for Lakewood, and the BlueClaws as a team struck out 18 times. Murphy had the biggest hit of the game with the walk-off single in the 12th that plated Mendez from 2nd base. It was Murphy's team leading 14th RBI of the season, and the 2nd walk-off win for Lakewood in this series and of the season.

The 2 teams will play one more game to finish out their 5 game series on Friday as LHP Ervis Manzanillo (0-1, 7.30 ERA) will throw for Lakewood, and LHP Nik Turley (1-1, 4.87 ERA) gets the start for Charleston. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 pm Friday evening at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood.
