Power Split With Hagerstown
April 28, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Pirates added right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon to the West Virginia roster. Taillon, the second overall pick in the 2010 draft, made the start Wednesday in a constant rain and allowed one run on three hits over two innings. The Power held a 3-1 lead after one inning and lead 7-1 when play was halted in the bottom of the second.
The suspended game resumed at 6:05 pm on Thursday and the Power continued the attack. West Virginia scored at least one run in six of their eight innings at bat. Zac Fuesser (1-0) pitched as play resumed, tossing five shutout innings while striking out eight. Chris McKenzie, Wednesday night Suns starter allowed seven runs and was charged with the loss. Matt Curry led all players with four runs batted in on two hits, while Dan Grovatt and Elias Diaz added three each. Bryce Harper hit a solo home run, his fifth of the season, in the eighth for Hagerstown.
In the regularly scheduled game, the Suns took a 1-0 lead against Colton Cain (0-1) in the first on a Harper base hit, but the Power tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Justin Howard drove in Gift Ngoepe. Hagerstown would add a run in the third and one in the fourth off Cain to build a 3-1 edge.
West Virginia had runners on base against Taylor Jordan (5-0) and the Suns bullpen every inning, but only managed a run in the home half of the sixth on a base hit by Kevin Mort. The Power had the tying run on in the bottom of the seventh, the final inning of the night, but Howard was retired on strikes by Chris Manno, who notched his third save.
The gates at Appalachian Power Park will open at 4 pm for Friday's series finale and fans are encouraged to come watch both West Virginia and Hagerstown take batting practice. The Power will send Zack Von Rosenberg against the Suns' Bobby Hansen with a 7:05 pm first pitch scheduled.
