Equal Distribution of Sun and Power as Clubs Split Twinbill

April 28, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release

Charleston, WV-Hagerstown and West Virginia split their doubleheader at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night as the Power surged to a 14-2 victory in Game One and fell in the nightcap by a score of 3-2. It took an entire day to complete the first contest as rainfall suspended play in the bottom of the 2nd inning on Wednesday night to force a doubleheader in which the ballclubs would pick up directly where they left off the previous night, before playing a seven inning Game Two.

West Virginia RHP Jameson Taillon, the number two overall draft pick from the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, got his first professional start on Wednesday night and allowed one earned run through 2.0 innings, without collecting a strikeout or allowing a walk on three base hits. C David Freitas ripped an RBI double off the right field wall to give the Suns a 1-0 lead. A day later, LHP Zac Fuesser (1-0), the winning pitcher of record, would toss 5.0 scoreless innings and allowed just four hits, while walking eight.

Suns RHP Chris McKenzie, the losing pitcher, made it through just 1.1 frames and surrendered seven runs on six hits and gave up four hits and four walks. Picking up with two outs in the home half of the second stanza, LHP Paul Applebee allowed four earned runs in 4.2 innings and received a no decision.

The Power poured on 14 runs, highlighted by a 2-for-3, 4 RBI night by 1B Matt Curry, a 2-for-5 evening for RF Justin Howard, who hit a 2-run home run over the right field fence off McKenzie. LF Andy Vasquez lofted a solo home run over the right field barrier. The Power scored three runs in the first frame, six runs in the second inning, individual runs in the 3rd, 5th, and 7th, and two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.

The only other Suns run came to fruition when RF Bryce Harper majestically drove his fifth home run of the season, a solo jack that cleared the right center field fence in the 8th inning.

In Game Two of the doubleheader, Game Four of the series, the Suns scored first with a Harper RBI line-drive single hit right back up the middle into shallow center. The Power would answer with a Justin Howard RBI fielder's choice ground ball to 1B Brett Newsome in their first offensive frame.

Hagerstown scored individual runs in the 3rd and 4th innings as Harper doubled in a run off the left center field wall and SS Jason Martinson went the other way with an RBI single to right field.

Power LHP, Colton Cain (1-1), the losing pitcher, surrendered three earned runs on eight hits and walked one over his 5.0 inning duration.

West Virginia would get one run closer with a Kevin Mort RBI one-base knock back up the middle cutting the Suns lead to 3-2.

The winning pitcher, Taylor Jordan (5-0), was terrific in his fourth start of the season, going 5.0 innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits. Jordan walked two and fanned four.

Suns LHP Chris Manno (3 SV) entered the game with a runner on third base and two outs in the bottom of the 6th inning and Kevin Mort on third base. With the tying run ninety feet away, Manno induced a grounder back to the mound and the southpaw made the out at first base ending the threat.

To garner a two-inning save, Manno would strike out the final two batters he faced in the 7th stanza, despite walking Curry to seal the one-run victory for the Hagerstown Suns.

Hagerstown will face off with West Virginia Friday night at Applachian Power Park for a 7:05 first pitch in the Game Five finale. The standoff will serve as the rubber match with each club garnering two wins in the series.
