Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (12-9) lost the lead in the top of the eighth inning, but scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats (7-13) 8-3 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Thursday night. The Shorebirds and Sand Gnats sat through a 27-minute rain delay before the start of the game and an hour and 17-minute rain delay after the first out of the eighth inning. The Shorebirds have won seven straight games, their losing win streak since the 2009 season.
The Shorebirds have scored five or more runs in 14 straight games.
In the second inning, the Shorebirds took an early lead. Kieron Pope reached to open the frame on an error by first baseman Sam Honeck. Kipp Schutz followed with a single to left field to push Pope to second base. After a double play ground out moved him to third, Pope scored on a passed ball by Blake Forsythe.
The Shorebirds added two more runs in the fifth inning. Mychal Givens hit a one out double down the left field line. After a Steve Bumbry walk, Jonathan Schoop hit an RBI single to score Givens. Pope hit an RBI single later in the frame to give the âBirds a 3-0 lead.
Shorebirds starter Tim Berry tossed five shutout innings. He allowed just two hits. Berry also struck out three and walked a season low one batter.
Cameron Roth took over in the sixth inning and did not allow a run over the next 2.1 innings.
With one out in the eighth inning, lightning struck and rain started to pour down as the teams were called off the field. When the game resumed one hour and 17 minutes later, Jason Gurka took over for Cameron Roth. Gurka struck out Cory Vaughn for the second out. Then, Honeck hit a pop fly behind second that Mychal Givens dropped to continue the inning. The next batter, Aderlin Rodriguez, hit a three-run homer over the left-center field wall to tie the game at 3-3.
The Shorebirds responded in the bottom of the eighth against new pitcher Gabriel Zavala. Kipp Schutz led off with a single. Two batters later, Michael Ohlman hit his first home run of the season to give the âBirds a 5-3 lead. The Shorebirds added three more runs in the inning on a total of seven hits. Givens, Schoop and Machado all had RBI hits in the inning.
