Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Neither the rain in Maryland, nor another home run from Aderlin Rodriguez could save the Sand Gnats from their sixth straight loss Thursday night. Again, the Delmarva Shorebirds used a late home run to beat the Gnats, this time by an 8-3 count, to take the first four games of the teams' five-game series.
The Shorebirds (12-9) won their seventh game in a row while the Gnats (7-13) lost their sixth straight game. The six-game losing streak for Savannah is a new season-high.
The Gants trailed 3-0 heading to the eighth inning. However, two batters into the eighth, a thunderstorm rolled through Salisbury, Maryland that caused a 1:44 rain delay. After the delay, with two on and two out, Gnats 3B Aderlin Rodriguez blasted a three-run home run to left-center field to tie the game at 3-3. It was the third home run of the series and the fourth in five games for the Gnats' 19-year old slugger.
Delmarva answered back with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against Savannah reliever Gabriel Zavala. The big shot was a two-run home run from catcher Michael Ohlman that broke the 3-3 tie to give the Shorebirds a 5-3 lead.
Shaky Gnats defense helped the Shorebirds build a 3-0 lead. In the second, an error, two singles and a passed ball allowed the Shorebirds to score the game's first run. In the fifth, with one out, Delmarva 2B Mychal Givens doubled and advanced to third on a fielding error on Gnats LF Joe Bonfe. After CF Steve Bumbry was hit by a pitch, Bumbry was caught stealing but stayed in a rundown. The Gnats cut down Givens at the plate, but a throwing error on 3B Aderlin Rodriguez allowed Bumbry to go to third safely. Delmarva 3B Jonathan Schoop then singled through the left side bringing home Bumbry to put Delmarva ahead 2-0. After a walk, RF Kipp Shutz singled to right scoring Schoop giving the Birds a 3-0 lead.
Savannah will send RHP Greg Peavey (1-1, 5.21) to the hill Friday night to stop the losing streak. Peavey will be opposed by RHP Luis Noel (1-1, 4.50) for Delmarva. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. The radio broadcast on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com will begin at 7 pm.
