September 1, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - The Sand Gnats and GreenJackets split their second doubleheader in as many days, 4-1 and 3-2, on Tuesday at Historic Grayson Stadium. Savannah has won 26 of their last 30 games.
The Gnats (43-19-1/82-50-1) broke the seal on a scoreless game with back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the fourth inning in game one. 2B Jonathan Johnson led off the inning with a single, stole second, and moved to third on single from RF Wuilmer Becerra. With runners on the corners, 3B Eudor Garcia ripped an RBI-double down the line in left to plate the pair. Garcia wasn't a baserunner long and came home on the double from 1B Michael Katz. LF Joe Tuschak scored Katz with an RBI-single for the fourth run of the inning.
Augusta (30-34/63-70) 2B Travious Relaford led off the sixth with a triple to right. Relaford scored the 'Jackets' lone run on a sacrifice fly from 3B Jonah Arenado. The GreenJackets totaled just three hits off Gnats' game one starter Chris Flexen (4-0). Flexen tossed 5.2 innings with eight strikeouts in route to his fourth win with the Gnats in 2015.
The 'Jackets took their first lead of the series in game two with two runs in the opening frame. Relaford singled to right and moved to second on a wild pitch by Gnats' game two starter Corey Oswalt (10-4). DH Skyler Ewing traded places with Relaford with an RBI-double. Monkey see, monkey do as RF Dylan Davis doubled home Ewing to give the 'Jackets a 2-0 lead. CF Andrew Cain doubled and scored in the second to push the lead to three.
With one out in the second, 1B Tyler Moore drew a walk giving the Gnats their first baserunner in game two. Augusta starter Jake McCasland (1-2) picked up his first strikeout before Tuschak stepped to the plate. Perfect timing for Tuschak's first roundtripper with the Gnats, a two-out two-run missile over the wall in right.
The bullpens each tossed 2.0 shutout innings, Paul Paez the lone reliever for the Gnats K'd three over his 2.0 innings of work. Reyes Moronta picked up his 11th save for the 'Jackets as Augusta held off Savannah, 3-2.
The Sand Gnats and 'Jackets will conclude the Amtrak Route to the Playoffs and the final homestand of the regular season for the Gnats tomorrow at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats will send RHP Josh Prevost (6-4, 3.76) to the hill in the regular season finale, while the GreenJackets will start LHP Mark Reyes (8-6, 2.15) on Wednesday. The Gnats will open the gates early tomorrow to allow fans to meet the players on the field pre-game. All fans in attendance will receive one complimentary entry to our Alternate Jersey Raffle. Additional entries can be purchased for $5 or 5 for $20.
