Three Former Legends Called up to Royals
September 1, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release
Outfielder Terrance Gore, right-handed pitcher Miguel Almonte and left-hander Scott Alexander, all of whom played for the Lexington Legends in 2013, have been called up to the major leagues by the Kansas City Royals.
"This is great news for everyone associated with the Lexington Legends," said Legends President/CEO Andy Shea. "All of these guys worked very hard when they were here, and it's really exciting to see them reach the top."
Almonte and Alexander will be making their major league debuts. Gore joined the Royals last September and was with them throughout their run to the World Series, primarily as a pinch-runner. Generally regarded as one of the fastest runners in baseball, he stole eight bases in eight attempts for Kansas City in 2014, including three in postseason play.
With the Legends in 2013, Gore stole 68 bases in 76 attempts. Before his callup to Kansas City in 2014, he played for advanced-A Wilmington and triple-A Omaha, and stole 47 bases in 54 tries. In 2015 with double-A Northwest Arkansas, Gore stole 39 bases and was caught twice in 85 games.
Almonte was 6-9 with an earned run average of 3.10 in 25 starts for the Legends in 2013. He struck out 132 batters in 130 and two-thirds innings. He pitched for Wilmington (6-8, 4.49, 101 strikeouts in 110.1 innings) in 2014, and moved up to Northwest Arkansas and Omaha this season, where he had a combined record of 6-6 with an ERA of 4.51 and struck out 96 batters in 103 and two-thirds innings.
Alexander made five appearances for Lexington in 2013 and compiled a 1-1 record with an ERA of 1.20. He has since pitched for Wilmington, Northwest Arkansas and Omaha. With Omaha this season, he was 2-3 with an ERA of 2.56 in 41 appearances. He saved 14 games in 18 save opportunities.
Almonte and Alexander will be the 58th and 59th former Legends to play in the major leagues.
