Yoan Moncada Receives South Atlantic League Honors
September 1, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - With hype coming from all directions in anticipation of his professional debut in the Boston Red Sox organization, Greenville Drive second baseman Yoan Moncada put together an outstanding 2015 season. As a result, Moncada was named to the South Atlantic League Annual All-Star Team and was selected as the league's Most Outstanding MLB Prospect, league President Eric Krupa announced Tuesday.
The All-Star team is voted on by the Field Managers, Coaches, General Managers, Media Relations Directors and Broadcasters of the 14 South Atlantic League teams.
Moncada becomes the fifth Drive player selected to the league's Annual All-Star team, joining outfielders Jeremy Hazelbaker (2010), Brandon Jacobs (2011) and Keury De la Cruz (2012) and utility infielder Carlos Asuaje (2014). Moncada is also the first Drive player selected as the South Atlantic League's Most Outstanding MLB Prospect in the 10 years of the Drive franchise.
"In this, his first year in professional baseball, Yoan has had an outstanding debut with us here in Greenville and is very much deserving of this recognition as one of the South Atlantic League's best players," said Drive Manager Darren Fenster.
"For him to join our organization under such a big spotlight and to perform at the level that he has over the course of the season is a testament to his work ethic and desire to become a Major Leaguer. We are very proud of the success Yoan has enjoyed this season, and couldn't be more excited to watch his continued development over the course of his career, as this is only the beginning for him."
In 73 games with the Drive through Monday, Moncada has showed off his electrifying potential on the basepaths with 45 stolen bases, a total that ranks third in the South Atlantic League. He has also posted a .291 average with 59 runs, 80 hits, eight homers, 36 RBI, 37 walks and a .391 on-base percentage.
Moncada took his game to another level in the second half of the season following a promotion to the leadoff spot in the lineup. In the 48 games since the move, he's swiped 41 bases in 44 tries and boasts a .335 average with seven home runs.
"Watching Yoan play this year has been a terrific experience for our staff and our fans, and we're thrilled to see him receive this recognition as not only one of the best players in the league, but one of the best prospects in baseball as well," said Drive General Manager Eric Jarinko.
"The Red Sox have done a tremendous job signing someone of his immense talent and developing him into an even better player in such a short time. We look forward to following Yoan as he continues his professional career, which will hopefully result in him playing in Boston for years to come."
The Drive begin their final homestand of the season on Thursday when they welcome the Savannah Sand Gnats, affiliate of the New York Mets, to town for a five-game series. Thursday's first pitch at Fluor Field is at 7:05 PM. To purchase tickets, head to the Main Street Box Office, call (864) 240-4528 or log onto GreenvilleDrive.com.
