September 1, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The South Atlantic League announced today that Suns 1B Jose Marmolejos was named to the league's annual All-Star Team for the 2015 season. The All-Star Team is voted on by the 14 South Atlantic League Team's Field Managers, General Managers, Sports Writers and Broadcasters for a total of 56 votes.
Marmolejos, who was the only Suns player voted onto the team, is having a breakout season with Hagerstown spurred by a tremendous second half performance. Since the All-Star break Marmolejos is hitting .328 (77-235) with 21 doubles, two triples, and five homeruns over 63 games. His overall season totals include a .305 average (134-440), a .355 on base percentage, and a .477 slugging percentage. Marmolejos also leads or is in the top five in the league in a number of categories including RBI (1st) with 81, total bases (1st) with 210, doubles (T-1st) with 36, extra-base hits (T-1st) with 51, hits (2nd) with 134, batting average (T-4th), and slugging percentage (4th).
Prior to the Suns game this past Sunday against Kannapolis, Marmolejos was given the award for team MVP by the Hagerstown Suns Fan Club. Marmolejos was signed by the Nationals as a non-drafted free agent in June, 2011. He spent both the 2011 and 2012 seasons playing with the Dominican Summer League Nationals, before coming stateside to play with the Gulf Coast League Nationals in 2013 and the Auburn Doubledays in 2014. This is Marmolejos' first postseason award, though he was named a New York - Penn League mid-season All-Star last season when playing for the Doubledays.
Marmolejos and his Suns teammates play their final two home games in 2015 tonight and tomorrow afternoon against the Kannapolis Intimidators. For tickets to either tonight's or tomorrow's game call 301-791-6266, or go to www.hagerstownsuns.com.
