Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV (September 1, 2015) - The South Atlantic League has announced the selection of the 2015 Annual All-Star Team. The West Virginia Power, a Class-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, had two players selected for individual honors. Yeudy Garcia was tabbed as both the Most Outstanding Pitcher and the top right-handed pitcher. Michael Suchy was chosen as one of the top outfielders as voted on by the league's field managers, coaches, general managers, sportswriters and media relations directors.
Garcia, 22, was signed by the Pirates on February 21, 2013, and had only pitched in the Dominican Summer League prior to this season. The right-hander, a native of Sabana Yegua, Dominican Republic, began the 2015 campaign in the Power bullpen, making eight relief appearances. Garcia was moved to the Power starting rotation in mid-May and now holds a 12-5 record with a league-best 2.11 earned run average. He was also tabbed as a mid-season All-Star and selected by Minor League Baseball as the best player in the South Atlantic League during the month of July, when he went 6-0 with a 0.90 ERA.
Suchy, 22, was selected in the fifth round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Florida Gulf Coast University. The Power right fielder is batting .280 this season with ten home runs and 73 runs batted in, second most in the league heading into play on Tuesday. Since June 1, Suchy is batting .307, ninth best in the league, has 56 runs batted in, second most, and 33 extra base hits, which is fourth-best.
Savannah's Luis Guillorme was named the South Atlantic League's Most Valuable Player while Greenville's Yoan Moncada was selected as the Most Outstanding Major League Prospect. Asheville led all clubs with three players tabbed for the Annual All-Star Team, while West Virginia, Savannah and Greensboro each placed a pair on the roster.
The Power have clinched the Northern Division's second half title and will host Hickory on September 9 at Appalachian Power Park. For more information or tickets, contact the Power front office at (304) 344-2287 or visit www.wvpower.com.
