Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (9-3-0) used a hat-trick by rookie forward Mike Angelidis and a four point night by Brent McDonald to win their fifth straight game with a 4-3 victory over the Pensacola Ice Pilots (1-9-1) on Friday night at Germain Arena in front of a standing room only crowd of 7,225. With the win, the Everblades have won the last 15 meetings between the South Division rivals.
The Everblades started off quick by picking up a short-handed goal by McDonald just 4:04 into the contest while Pensacola enjoyed their first power play of the game. David Brine assisted on McDonald's third goal of the season. The Everblades continued dominating the first period and added their second goal of the night when Angelidis tallied his first of the night on a rebound from Pensacola goaltender Mike Ayers at 14:25. McDonald and Steve Czech chipped in the assists.
The Ice Pilots however battled back in the second period outplaying the Everblades and outscoring them 3-0 in the frame. Nikita Korovkin tallied a power play goal at 3:57 when his shot from the top of the right circle snuck past Everblades net-minder Craig Kowalski. Rob Rankin notched his first goal of the season at 14:47 to complete a 3-on-2 rush to tie the game, then Mike Wirll scored his first with the Ice Pilots and seventh on the season with 1:06 remaining in the period and Pensacola enjoying the power play.
Trailing by one heading into the third period the Everblades took advantage of a miscue by Ayers behind the net and Angelidis was able to bank a shot off the sprawling goalie and into the cage to tie the game at three. Just over eight minutes later Angelidis completed the hat-trick, the first of his career, by converting a 3-on-2 rush up ice. Brine carried the puck in the zone on the right side after taking a pass from McDonald and dropped it back for Angelidis who ripped a wrist shot from the high slot past Ayers to give the Everblades a 4-3 lead.
The 'Blades held on through a wild final two minutes when Kowalski was forced to make several big saves with the Ice Pilots attacking six players to five. Kowalski turned away a total of 23 shots to win his fourth straight and raise his record to 4-2-0. Ayers, playing in his first game with the Ice Pilots suffered the loss by allowing the four goals on 36 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades finished the night 0-for-7, while the Ice Pilots finished off the game 2-for-7.
The win improved Florida's home record to 6-2-0, and improved the Everblades' all-time record vs. Pensacola to 38-11-9.
