Salmon Kings stormed by Stockton

Victoria Salmon Kings News Release


Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, met a rumbling Stockton Thunder in the final game of the two game series at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Victoria kept creeping within a goal, but Stockton ran away with a 6-3 win.

The Thunder struck just 13 seconds into the first period, taking Victoria defenseman by surprise and gaining the 1-0 advantage. Tim Verbeek spotted Tyler Spurgeon alone in front of the Salmon Kings net and Spurgeon tallied his fourth goal of the season. While on their first powerplay of the game, the Thunder added a goal at 5:46 into the period.

Nathan Martz found the rebound off Goaltender Julien Ellis and rippled the mesh of the open cage.

Defenseman James DeMone earned his first point with the Salmon Kings at 8:00 into the first and helped Victoria climb within one. In the Salmon Kings first powerplay of the game, Milan Gajic fed DeMone in the slot and he went top corner on Netminder Devan Dubnyk.

Stockton started the second with a 3-1 lead as a Tim O'Connell shot slipped past a screened Ellis for another Thunder powerplay goal, just 33 seconds into the period. Rookie defenseman Seamus Young tallied his second goal in as many nights and the Salmon Kings narrowed the gap. F.P. Guenette threw the puck to Young in the slot and he rang the shot off the crossbar for his fourth goal of the season.

The Thunder took over in the third period and added three goals. Troy Bodie earned the eventual game winner at 6:35 into the final stanza as he was left alone to cross the slot and beat Ellis for a Stockton 4-2 lead. Less than a minute later, Gajic earned his third point of the game and his fifth goal of the season. Squeezing between two defenders, Gajic finished a lead pass from David Wrigley to poke the puck past Dubnyk and crash the net.

The Thunder struck twice for insurance goals scored by Stephane Goulet with a turnaround low snap shot, and Defenseman Mike Adamek with a shot from just over the blueline.

Final score: 6-3 Stockton

Ellis' four game win streak was halted and he suffered his second loss of the season, and Dubnyk earned his sixth victory. Victoria was 2 for 8 on the power play and Stockton went 2 for 7 with the man advantage. The Thunder outshot the Salmon Kings 45-30. Stockton (8-1-2) travels to Utah (3-8-2) for a game on Nov 19 and Victoria (6-6-1) will follow suit with a two-game series in Utah starting on Nov 24.
