COLUMBIA, SC -The Florida Everblades (35-17-3) dropped a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker to the Columbia Inferno (21-26-9) on Saturday night at the Carolina Coliseum in front of a crowd of 3,140 as goaltenders Craig Kowalski and Todd Ford stole the show with several big saves.
After a scoreless first period in which the Everblades out shot the Inferno 12-8, Columbia broke the deadlocked score midway through the second period. With the Everblades enjoying their fourth power play of the night, Bryson Busniuk blocked a shot from the point and skated in on Kowalski. Busniuk deked to the back-hand and slipped a shot between the pads of Kowalski at 13:45 for the lone second period goal. The short-handed tally was Busniuk's first and Columbia's fifth of the season.
The Everblades came out strong in the third period and managed to tie the game early when Brad Parsons let a wrist shot fly from the slot that beat Ford inside the right post at 4:47 of the final period. From there, both goaltenders took over from there with both Ford and Kowalski keeping their respective teams in the game.
As the game moved to overtime, the Inferno had two early chances to win with breakaways, but Kowalski stopped both chances but it was Jeff Miles' shot from the left circle that found its way over Kowalski's glove and under the cross bar for the game-winner 3:51 into the extra session. The overtime win was Columbia's first this season in five tries.
Kowalski earned a tie in the standings by turning away 32 of 34 shots, which brought his record to 22-10-2, and Ford earned the win by stopping 34 of 35 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades failed to convert on any of their four chances, while the Inferno finished the night 1-for-6.
