Cey Makes 49 Saves, Elliott Scores, But Wheeling Gets Victory In Extra Session

Wheeling, W.Va. - The Wheeling Nailers edged the Johnstown Chiefs by a score of 3-2 in a shootout at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia on Saturday.

Johnstown got on the board first as Grant Jacobsen took a pass behind the net from Ryan Gibbons and made a wraparound move to beat Wheeling goaltender Andrew Penner at 2:44. Wheeling would tie the score at 13:50 when David Mitchell took a centering pass from Vin Hellemeyer and beat Chiefs goaltender Morgan Cey on the glove side.

Wheeling would retake the lead on the power play in the second period, when Cody Blanshan fired a shot from the point past Cey at 15:56.

The Chiefs would force overtime when Brandon Elliott scored his 11th goal of the season at 14:27 of the third period, beating Penner with a shot that trickled through his legs and across the goal line.

Cey made 49-of-51 saves in regulation and overtime, as well as stopping a third-period penalty shot from Wheeling's Jon Smyth, before the Nailers' final three shooters scored in the shootout, with Joe Guenther netting the deciding goal. The Chiefs were 0-for-2 on the power play.

The Chiefs return home on Sunday to face the Toledo Storm at 3:00 p.m. The first 2,000 fans through the gate will receive a voucher that could win them $500 cash courtesy of 1st Summit Bank!
