Long Beach, CA - Two goals by Long Beach Ice Dogs' leading scorer Ash Goldie helped end the Steelheads' season-best, nine-game unbeaten streak as they fell 4-2 on Saturday night in front of 3,015 fans at Long Beach Arena.
The Ice Dogs (21-31-0-3) netted the only goal of the first period at the 5:47 mark, when Goldie found himself alone in the slot, allowing him to fire a shot past Steelheads' goaltender John Daigneau (21 saves). Ryan Bennett, who was able to grab a turnover in the right circles of the Steelheads' (31-19-2-3) zone and feed Goldie, got the lone helper on Goldie's 28th of the season.
Just 59 seconds into the second period, the Steelheads tied the game on a power play goal by Lance Galbraith. Forward Marty Flichel and defenseman Darrell Hay drew the assists on Galbraith's 23rd of the season, as he extended his scoring streak to seven games, tipping home Flichel's shot from the point by Ice Dogs' goaltender Brett Jaeger (20 saves).
Midway through the second stanza the home team scored twice in less than two minutes to claim a 3-1 advantage. At 8:35, Bo Cheesman rang a shot off the crossbar and into the back of the net and then at 10:27, Mark Tobin picked up his sixth of the campaign off a scramble in Daigneau's crease. Both tallies were even-strength, as the Ice Dogs led 3-1 after 40 minutes of play, despite being out-shot 20-17.
Colin Shields got the Steelheads back to within a goal at 6:48 of the third period off a prolonged shift in the Ice Dogs' zone. Scott Burt cycled the puck down in the right wing corner for Taggart Desmet, who found Shields below the goal line. Shields walked out of the corner and fired a side angle shot that beat goaltender Mike Brown (6 saves) for his 15th of the season. Brown had come into the contest at 4:28 of the stanza after Jaeger left the match with an undisclosed injury.
However at 10:34, Goldie scored on a shorthanded, unassisted breakaway to give the Ice Dogs a 4-2 lead and essentially seal the contest. After picking off a pass at the Steelheads' blue line, Goldie raced into the offensive zone and beat Daigneau past his blocker for his 29th of the year.
The final shots favored the Steelheads 28-25. The visitors ended the night one-for-four on the power play and a perfect five-for-five on the penalty kill.
The Steelheads finish their four-game road swing against the Las Vegas Wranglers on Tuesday, March 6. Faceoff is at 8:05 p.m. MST. Don't forget, Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the all-new, print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
