Buffalo Bisons News Release
BUFFALO, NY - A Josh Ockimey two-run home run was the difference for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in their 5-3 win against the Buffalo Bisons on Sunday afternoon to split the six-game series at Sahlen Field.
Otto Lopez once again helped the Bisons offense get on the scoreboard in the opening inning. The infielder drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning, then promptly stole his 11th base of the season. An errant throw by Rafael Marchan allowed Lopez to advance to third, and then he scored from first thanks to a fielding error by Chris Sharpe. The run gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead.
After Lehigh Valley tied the game with a run in the top of the third, Buffalo answered right back to extend the lead back to a run, 2-1. Rafael Lantigua led off the bottom of the inning with a base hit. He scored thanks to an L.J. Talley RBI groundout.
Ockimey capped a three-run top of the fourth inning off of Bisons starter Thomas Hatch with a two-run home run that allowed the IronPigs to open up a 4-2 lead over the Herd. Lopez was able to get one of the runs back when he scored for the second time in the game in the home half of the frame. Nathan Lukes grounded out but collected his 47th RBI of the season in the process. The run producing groundout made the score 4-3 Lehigh Valley.
The IronPigs would tack on an insurance run in the top of the ninth off of Bisons reliever Matt Gage. Daniel Robertson scored for the second time in the game on Dalton Guthrie's third hit of the afternoon.
Buffalo's bullpen allowed just one run in four innings of work. Julian Merryweather struck out two of the three batters he faced in his Major League injury rehab assignment. Fellow right hander Jackson Rees struck out the side in the top of the eighth to give the Herd a chance.
The Bisons will welcome the Columbus Clippers for their only trip to Buffalo this season. The back half of the homestand starts with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday night against the Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians.
