LAST TIME OUT
ST. PAUL, MN (August 20, 2022) - T The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders swept a doubleheader with the St. Paul Saints at CHS Field on Saturday, winning 5-4 and 4-0. The RailRiders allowed just four hits total between the pair of games and have guaranteed at least a split of this series against the Saints.
Tim Locastro opened the offense in game one two pitches in, launching a leadoff home run off Saints spot starter Mario Sanchez. After Oswald Peraza walked, Phillip Evans singled to right, driving in Peraza to extend the lead. The RailRiders added a pair of runs in the second inning on sac flies by Chris Owings and Matt Pita for a 4-0 edge. St. Paul plated a pair of runs without a hit in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of three straight walks by Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Matt Krook. Krook struck out six and walked seven over 4.2 innings. Greg Weissert pitched a perfect seventh to close the game.
In game two, Mitch Spence matched Juan Minaya zero for zero over the first three innings. Spence walked two in the first and didn't allow a hit until the third. Minaya held the RailRiders in check, allowing just two hits before Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scored three runs against Drew Strotman in the fourth.
Locastro tripled to left to start the fourth and scored on a single from Miguel Andujar. After Ben Rortvedt walked, Armando Alvarez doubled home the pair to extend the lead to 3-0. Andujar added an RBI single in the fifth to extend the RailRiders lead to 4-0, driving in Chad Bell from second with two outs. Spence (1-1) pitched six shutout frames, allowing just two hits while striking out three.
NEWS & NOTES
FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders are on the road to face the St. Paul Saints for the first time in franchise history at CHS Field. The Saints are just the third team from the International League West that the RailRiders see this year (Toledo Mud Hens and Louisville Bats).
BUY ONE, GET ONE - The RailRiders swept a doubleheader over St. Paul on Saturday in their first true doubleheader since June 8 at Syracuse. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitching staff surrendered just four hits total, two in each game. Both of those games matched a season-low for any game regardless of length. SWB pitching gave up just two hits in a nine inning game on June 24 in Toledo.
USE THE FORCE - Luke Bard was recalled by the Yankees today as Albert Abreu was placed on the 15-Day Injured List with right elbow inflammation. Bard had pitched in just three games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since being claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay on August 5. He had been charged with three runs in 4.2 innings in this stint. Bard will make Yankees debut whenever he first pitches.
NOT WITH US - Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton began a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Saturday while the team is in Bowie, MD. The 32 year-old slugger went 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts last night. Stanton has been held out of competition since July 23. He is nursing left achilles tendonitis. He had an IL stint earlier in the season that lasted from May 25 to June 4. He missed time then with a right calf strain.
DANNY BOY - Danny Salazar is set to start Sunday's game as he pitches for the first time since September 1, 2019 while with the Akron RubberDucks (AA). This will not only be his Yankees organizational debut, but the first time in his professional career that he pitches outside of the Cleveland organization. Salazar has made all of his 238 Minor and Major League appearances with Cleveland and its affiliates. He has dealt with a myriad of injuries, mostly with his shoulder which has held him out of the field of play. He was an American League All-Star in 2016.
ARMANDOLORIAN - Armando Alvarez has tallied six hits in 19 at bats in this series. Of those six hits, four of them have gone for extra bases with a homer and three doubles. Alvarez had doubled in three straight games twice in the month of August from August 4 to August 6 and August 11 to August 13. His two double performance on Saturday (game one) was the second time this year he had doubled twice along with June 30 against Buffalo. He has had three doubles in a single game twice in his career.
A GREG UP ON THE COMPETITION - Greg Weissert has not been charged with a run in 22 straight appearances, the longest stretch for any RailRiders pitcher this season. This scoreless streak has lasted 23.0 innings. After chalking up a save on Saturday in game one (his second of the series), Weissert is second in the International League with 18 saves behind Fernando Cruz's 21 with Louisville.
STREAKY - Oswald Peraza, Ryan LaMarre and Ronald Guzmán have seven-game on-base streaks... Miguel Andújar has a four-game hit streak with Scranton/Wilkes Barre... Armando Alvarez and Tim Locastro have three-game hit streaks. Locastro also has a six-game on-base streak. Both of his streaks span different stints with SWB...
SINGLES' NIGHT - Wednesday, SWB tallied three hits in the first three innings then just one hit over the next six. All four of their hits were singles.
BLANKED - The RailRiders were shut out on Wednesday for their eleventh shutout loss of the season. In the first 55 games of the season, the RailRiders were shut out nine times. In their last 60 games, it's only happened twice.
ON DECK - The RailRiders are on the road for two weeks and won't be home again until August 30 to host the Syracuse Mets for their third to final homestand of the season. Get 2-for-1 lawn or bleacher seats online only and enjoy $2 Landshark Lager tallboys for two hours after gates open, presented by PrimoHoagies and The River.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - The New York Yankees (73-48) lost 5-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays. Estevan Florial drove in a run with a single in the second. The Yankees have lost 15 of their last 19 games and have now lost their sixth straight series. Nestor Cortes looks to salvage the series finale today against Alek Manoah at 1:35 PM EST... The Somerset Patriots (68-44) lost their third straight to the Bowie Baysox 5-3. The Patriots were down 5-0 by the fourth but a three-run rally fell short. Clayton Beeter starts the finale today at 1:05 PM EST... The Hudson Valley Renegades (60-52) earned their 60th win last night with 5-1 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones. Carlos Narvaez hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the victory. Blane Abeyta starts the finale today at 2:00 PM EST... The Tampa Tarpons (58-53) were rained out on Saturday. After being rained out eight times in the month of July, that was their first rainout in August. The Tarpons play a doubleheader today against Bradenton at 12:00 PM EST. Yon Castro gets the start in game one...
