Iowa Cubs News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Iowa Cubs (52-65) dropped Sunday's finale against the Indianapolis Indians (58-57) at Victory Field, losing an 8-2 matchup to give the Indians the series victory.

The I-Cubs went down one-two-three in their first inning on offense, but the Indians wasted no time in getting their day started. Hoy Jun Park, Indianapolis' leadoff man, hit a solo home run on the third pitch of the bottom of the first, giving the Indians an early 1-0 advantage. They doubled their lead in the second when Jack Suwinski, who reached on a single, came around to score on a wild pitch.

Indians starter Johan Oviedo stumped the Iowa lineup through three, but when the bullpen took over in the fourth, the I-Cubs fared better. Alfonso Rivas walked to open the inning, Narciso Crook singled, then Greg Deichmann doubled to drive both runners in and tie the game at two runs apiece.

The tie hadn't lasted an inning before Indianapolis retook the lead, however. In their half of the fourth, the Indians used a leadoff walk, a single, and another wild pitch to plate two more, giving them back their two-run lead. They added even more insurance in the fifth with their second homer of the day - this one a three-run shot from Carter Bins - which put them up 7-2, and one more run on a seventh-inning sacrifice fly.

While the Indians kept adding on, the I-Cubs couldn't keep up. They put just two men on between the fifth and seventh innings, both on walks. Though they got a runner as far as third base in the eighth, they couldn't push any more runs across the plate, and Indianapolis took home the finale by a final score of 8-2.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Dakota Mekkes pitched two innings, allowed two runs, and left with no decision in his first start of the season.

Today's loss moved Iowa to a season-high 13 games below .500, at 52-65.

The two I-Cubs runs today gave them a total of 16 this week, which is the fewest they've collected in a series this year.

Darius Hill's 2-for-4 day extended his hitting streak to nine games, which is three shy of his season and career high.

Iowa will take tomorrow off before returning to Principal Park on Tuesday to begin a six-game series against St. Paul. First pitch between the I-Cubs and the Saints is set for 6:38. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
