Bears Three Points Out with Trip to Norfolk Looming

March 10, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release

Last Week: The Bears dropped three games in three days beginning with a 6-2 setback at Rochester. Milan Bartovic scored the second hat trick of the season against HERSHEY in the victory, while Phil Sauve absorbed the loss. Saturday night the Bears dug themselves a 4-1 hole early in the third period and rebounded with goals from Brian Willsie and Steve Brule, but fell short in losing 4-3. Toby Petersen scored two goals in the winning effort for Wilkes Barre/Scranton. Sunday night was the most disappointing of the three losses, as the Bears outshot the Binghamton Senators 17-9 in the third period, but lost in the game's final minute on a goal by Binghamton's Josh Langfeld. Antoine Vermette scored the empty net goal to put the game on ice as the Senators won 3-1. HERSHEY allowed two power play goals in three chances, and the Bears could not convert a 5 on 3 power play midway through the third.

Notables: The Bears drew 7,902 fans on Sunday night to eclipse the franchise's all time yearly attendance record. The old record was set during the 1994-95 season. With five home games remaining, the club has drawn 268,941 fans to GIANT Center. With an average attendance this season of 7,684, the Bears are on pace to reach the 300,000 mark in attendance during the final weekend of the regular season. After this weekend when Albany and Wilkes Barre/Scranton come to call, HERSHEY will have just three home games remaining, with eight games left away from GIANT Center. The Bears will travel next week to the westernmost point in club history with two games in Salt Lake City against the Utah Grizzlies. Dale Clarke's goal on Sunday was his first as a Bear. He had been a healthy scratch since February 22nd. Cail MacLean played Sunday night against Binghamton. He had been a healthy scratch since February 23rd. The three straight losses for Mike Foligno's club ties a season high.

Colorado Update: Colorado continues to chase the Vancouver Canucks for an unprecedented ninth straight division title. This week finds the Avalanche at home with Phoenix tonight, followed by three consecutive road games. Colorado will be at Columbus on Thursday night at Nationwide Arena before playing at Detroit Saturday afternoon, and in Washington on Sunday against the Capitals. Saturday's game with Detroit can be seen on ABC.
