AHL American Hockey League

Former AHL star Kilrea reaches milestone

March 10, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

Former American Hockey League star Brian Kilrea made history on Sunday night when he became the first head coach in Canadian major junior hockey history to win 1,000 career games.

All 1,000 wins have come at the helm of the Ontario Hockey League's Ottawa 67's.

Kilrea spent parts of 10 seasons as a player in the AHL, with Springfield from 1959-68 and with Rochester in 1968-69. A six-time 20-goal scorer, Kilrea totaled 171 goals and 453 assists for 624 points in 622 AHL games, ranking 12th on the league's all-time list in assists and 29th all-time in points.

Kilrea was a member of the Indians' Calder Cup-winning teams in 1960, 1961 and 1962, the only time a team has ever won three consecutive AHL championships.

Ottawa defeated Sudbury on Sunday, 4-2, at a sold-out Ottawa Civic Centre. Kilrea's career coaching record stands at 1,000-599-137
