Bears Dismiss Admirals for Third Straight Win
January 10, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release
HERSHEY, Pa. - Brandon Anderson made 30 saves in his first career AHL start, Nate Schmidt scored two power play goals and added an assist, and Casey Wellman added a goal and two assists, as the Hershey Bears stormed past the Norfolk Admirals by a 3-1 count on Saturday night at GIANT Center.
Norfolk would draw first blood in this contest, scoring at the 9:05 mark of the opening period. Former Bears center Dave Steckel would get two chances at a bouncing rebound, and would finally slam the puck home past Anderson for his second goal of the year.
Hershey would earn its first power play of the game moments later, and would convert to knot the score. Schmidt, reassigned from Washington earlier in the day, set up shop at the center point and bombed a long, low slap shot through traffic. The puck slid inside the right post at 11:22 for Schmidt's first of the season.
The Bears would kill off a short two-man disadvantage in the second period and a third five-on-four chance for Norfolk, and then embark on their second power play of the night. Schmidt, again set up at the high center point, wound up and stepped into a shot that blew by LaBarbera at 16:34 for a 2-1 Hershey lead.
Schmidt nearly had a hat trick before the period expired, but Wellman's stick would line up perfectly to deflect another slapper past LaBarbera at 19:35, putting the Bears up 3-1 at the second intermission.
The score would hold to the final horn, as Anderson stopped all 12 shots he faced from Norfolk to complete his first Hershey victory. LaBarbera finished with 27 saves on 30 shots and fell to 5-5-1 on the season.
The Bears' third straight win improves the team to 19-12-4-1 on the season and moves the club within one point of the top spot in the East Division.
The Bears remain home to host the Admirals tomorrow, January 11 at 5:00 PM. Individual tickets for this and all remaining home games are available at the GIANT Center box office, online at TicketMaster.com or by calling 717-508-BEAR.
