Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY - Matt Reynolds and Wil Myers knocked a three-run homer each, but the Louisville Bats (35-27) fell 18-7 to the St. Paul Saints (37-26) in the series opener on Tuesday evening at Slugger Field.
St. Paul got off to a quick start, combining a pair of singles and a home run to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the second.
Last week's International League Player of the Week, Christian Encarnacion-Strand started off a Bats rally in the bottom half of the second by blasting a double off the right field wall. Henry Ramos followed up by drawing a walk to put two on for Matt Reynolds who smashed a three-run, 439-footer dinger which tied up the score at 3-3.
With two homers and a string of hits, the Saints built up a comfortable lead of 10-3 by the end of the fourth.
Louisville fought back , scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Leading off the effort, Chuckie Robinson drew a walk and Alejo Lopez doubled. Reds rehabber Nick Senzel started off his second rehab assignment of the season with Louisville by singling to load the bases for Joey Votto. With a sac fly, Votto scored one for the Bats to make it 10-4. Myers, also on rehab, got the first hit of his assignment when he blistered the second three-run homer of the game, slashing the Saints' lead down to 10-7.
St. Paul pulled away, scoring again in the top of the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings to strengthen their lead at 18-7.
Despite getting runners on base in the bottom of the eighth, the Louisville lineup was unable to plate a run and ultimately dropped the series opener to the Saints with a final score of 18-7.
The Bats will aim for their first win of the series against St. Paul tomorrow, Wednesday, June 14. With a projected start time of 12:05 pm E.T., righthander Brett Kennedy (2-1, 2.63) will take the hill for Louisville and face off against fellow righty Randy Dobnak (2-3, 6.15) for the Saints.
