February 20, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Victoria, B.C. - Kory Scoran, Marty Flichel and Mike Sullivan each recorded two points, with Sullivan potting his fifth game-winner late in the third period as the Steelheads moved to within one point of the West Division-leading Salmon Kings via a 3-2 win on Wednesday from the SaveOnFoods Memorial Centre.
The Steelheads (30-16-8) are now unbeaten in their last four contests and 4-1-1 against the Salmon Kings (32-15-5) this season, as they handed the home team just their fourth regulation loss in 25 games.
Scoran buried the only goal of the first period for either side, when he blasted a one-timer over the blocker of Salmon Kings' goaltender Billy Thompson (29 saves) at the 12:41 mark of the first period. Taggart Desmet and Sullivan drew the helpers on Scoran's second of the year, with Desmet's assist extending his scoring streak to a season-high, seven games.
Flichel increased the visitors' advantage to 2-0 before the second period came to an end, notching his 14th of the campaign at 11:09. On the play, John Lammers slipped a deft pass from behind the cage of Thompson and over to Flichel, who snapped the puck into a wide open net for an even-strength marker. The assist moved Lammers' point streak to a career-high 10 outings.
Through 40 minutes of play the shots favored the Steelheds 20-14.
At 8:28 of the third period Jordan Krestanovich netted a power play goal to pull the Salmon Kings within one, his 12th of the season. That goal ended Steelheads goaltender's Kellen Briggs (27 saves) shutout streak against the Salmon Kings at 161:33, dating back to November 23.
Sullivan gave the Steelheads some breathing room with 2:11 left in regulation when he swatted a bouncing puck out of mid air and past Thompson for his 11th goal. Flichel grabbed the lone assist to complete his two-point effort.
Ash Goldie scored in the final minute of play to make it 3-2, collecting his 29th, a power play goal with the extra attacker out for a six-on-four advantage. Kiel McLeod and Dylan Yeo set up the game's final score.
In their 14th road win this year the Steelheads out-shot the Salmon Kings 32-29. The Steelheads ended the evening zero-for-three on the man advantage, while the Salmon Kings scored twice in four opportunities. Briggs (15-8-1) won for the fifth time in his last seven decisions, while Thompson lost his eighth game overall.
The Steelheads take on the Salmon Kings in game two of their three-game series on Friday, February 22. The puck drops at 8:05 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on 1350 AM, KTIK "The Ticket" or via the B2 Networks.
