South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Columbia, SC - Marty Guerin scored twice and the South Carolina Stingrays put up five goals as they defeated the Columbia Inferno 5-1 at the Carolina Coliseum.
"I like the way we came out here tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "We came out with a lot of drive and a lot of jump."
The Stingrays scored early and often at the Carolina Coliseum. In the first period it was Marty Guerin scoring on a five on three at 10:28, his 13th goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Chris Chaput and Travis Morin. Less than two minutes later, at 12:09, Chaput got a goal of his own, his 17th of the year, from Guerin and Morin, making it 2-0 after one period.
The Rays extended their lead to three goals when Trent Campbell got a one-timer from Steve Pinizzotto at 6:27 of the second period. Pinizzotto took the puck behind the net and found Campbell at the bottom of the circle for the shot.
The third period featured more of the same as Marty Guerin struck again, his second of the game and 14th of the year, from Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Chaput at 2:01. Just sixteen seconds later Scott Romfo found the puck in front of the crease and put it top shelf behind Todd Ford. For Romfo it was his 7th goal with the assists going to Morin and Nate Kiser. With less than two minutes to go in the game Steve McJannet got the Inferno on the board to make it 5-1, the eventual final.
The winning goaltender was Davis Parley who stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Todd Ford who stopped 22 of the 27 shots he faced before being replaced by Jeff Jakaitis with 17:43 left to go in the game. Jakaitis stopped all seven shots he faced. The Rays went one for three on the power play while killing off five of the six short handed situations they faced.
The Rays are back in action tomorrow night as they Charlotte Bobcats Arena to take on the Checkers. Game time will be at 7:05 P.M.
