Bains, Rebels Cool of Blades in 6-1 Win
February 5, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
SASKATOON, SK - Arshdeep Bains led the scoring on Saturday night, netting a hat-trick and two assists to help the Red Deer Rebels defeat the Saskatoon Blades 6-1 at SaskTel Centre.
The loss comes less than 24 hours after the Blades defeated the country's best Edmonton Oil Kings 6-1 on home ice.
Bains now holds sole possession of the league-lead in points with 64, one up on Blades alternate captain Kyle Crnkovic, while Rebels veteran Ben King added three helpers to sit third in the WHL scoring race.
Forward Josh Pillar made his Pacman debut, collecting two penalty minutes in his first game with his hometown team. The Minnesota Wild prospect was acquired by the Blades at the WHL Trade Deadline last month.
NHL Draft-eligible forward Brandon Lisowsky had the lone goal for the Blue & Gold, which came late in the first period. Red Deer's Kalan Lind would tie it not too long after Lisowsky's marker which broke the floodgates heading into the second.
Bains hat-trick came in natural fashion less than seven minutes apart. His opening marker, at the 3:16 mark of the second period, served as the eventual game winner. Jace Isley and Liam Keeler added two late in the period to give the Rebels a commanding 6-1 advantage.
Red Deer's Connor Ungar made 18 stops helping the Rebels improve to 29-13-2-1.
Blades netminder Ethan Chadwick had 19 saves on 25 shots before Nolan Maier took over midway through the second. Maier stopped all 11 shots he faced as Saskatoon falls to 23-16-1-1 on the campaign.
Saskatoon struck first late in the first thanks to a heads-up play from Trevor Wong. The speedy centreman caught Lisowsky in the neutral zone who split the Rebels defenceman, creating an open breakaway on Ungar.
Shortly after, a Lind point shot appeared to hit the crossbar and the Rebels started to celebrate, but the official waved it off and the Blades cleared the puck.
Play went on for another 30 seconds before play was blown dead and the shot went under-review. After a brief conversation, the shot was deemed a good goal having barely crossed the line in the upper corner, tying the game after twenty.
Red Deer came out firing in the second and took the early period lead thanks to Ben King's lead pass to Arshdeep Bains. The play went under-review for a missed offside call but it was later deemed a good goal.
Bains went on to score two more times in the period with Jace Isely and Liam Keeler each adding second period markers.
Blades netminder Chadwick was replaced by Maier with 7:41 remaining after Keeler scored the Rebels fifth goal of the period.
Maier finished the remainder of the game but the Blades could not find another way past Ungar as neither team found the scoresheet to close out the final frame.
The Blades will put this game behind them and turn to Wednesday night where the Calgary Hitmen come to town for Winning Wednesday.
