Rockets Pull Away in Third for 4-1 Win over Chiefs
February 5, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - The Chiefs kept it tight through two but the visiting Kelowna Rockets pulled away in the third, handing Spokane a 4-1 defeat on Friday night at Spokane Arena. Spokane retired former star Tyler Johnson's jersey in a pre-game ceremony.
After a scoreless opening frame, the Rockets jumped on the board first as veteran forward Mark Liwiski just under five minutes into the second. Kelowna snuck behind the Chiefs at the expiration of a Spokane power play for a two-on-one opportunity.
The visitors added to the lead at 7:50 as Nolan Flamand potted his sixth of the year, with assists to Turner McMillen and John Babcock.
Spokane answered to cut the deficit in half with 4:23 left in the middle frame as team captain Bear Hughes - wearing number eight for the first time after the pre-game jersey retirement ceremony - rifled the puck inside the top-right corner. Chase Bertholet and Saige Weinstein earned the assists, extending Bertholet's point streak to three games.
That is as close as the Chiefs would get as Kelowna reclaimed a two-goal margin at 13:53 of the third when Liwiski scored his second of the night. Pavel Novak added an unassisted goal 26 seconds later to seal it for the Rockets.
Spokane finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. Mason Beaupit started in goal for the Chiefs and turned away 35 of 39 total shots faced. Talyn Boyko started for Kelowna and went 24-for-25.
The Chiefs conclude their five-game homestand tomorrow night versus the Portland Winterhawks.
